Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I am in the very early stages of convincing DH that Hunter NEEDS a sibling to grow up with.  I have actually got him to the point where he said he would want another female (long story as to why but whatever I am fine with that).  What I am wondering is what personality differences do you see between the F1's and F1B's, F2B's, etc. etc.  Hunter is an F1 which I love and I am kind of thinking "she is perfect why change" then I think "I could have different perfect" - see my dilema?

HUGE difference between my F1's and I've had a total of 3.  Although I would say Boca and Thule are more similar to each other than either of them are to Rosco.  So I just don't know that you can generalize WITHIN a generation let alone between them.

What kind of personality characteristics are you wanting to know about? It is UNLIKELY your second doodle will be just like Hunter, but that's okay because you'll like the second one for different reasons.

I think that there is a difference.  I have an F1 and an F2B.  Jax, the F1 (7 months), is definitly more golden retreiver in personality.  Bandit, the F2B (6 months), has more poodle in him and has acted more "poodley" in my opinion.  He is more active and tends to be more of a clown.  He can walk on two legs and jump high like a poodle, however, he is the better retreiver of the two..  I love both of their personalities because they offset each other.  Jax is really laid back and it helps that Bandit always wants to be silly and play.  I got Jax first and didn't think I could ever have a more perfect dog.  Bandit is just as perfect but in a different way.  I thought hard about getting Bandit and I don't regret it at all.  They love each other and bring out the best of each other.

I don't think the personality of any individual doodle has much to do with the generation. I think it's more about the temperaments of the parents and the environment in which the pups are raised. And even then, there are big variations in personality among the pups in any one litter. I think our breeders here would testify to the differences in personality they see among pups in the same litter...some are more laid back, some are feistier, etc.

You'll have a "different perfect" anyway, no matter what kind of doodle you choose, lol. A lot of Hunter's perfect is due to YOU!

I am with Caitlin and Adina on this one.  I think the way the genes fall together and early socialization and training determine the individual dog's personality.
Hi Denise, I am just going to throw in my two cents. Fudge is a F1B Labradoodle and Vern is a F3 Labradoodle. Their personalities are night and day, and I like that about them. The things I love about Fudge are totally different than what I love about Vern, but they compliment each other beautifully. I am so happy that they are not alike, but maybe that is just me. Vern is my first boy dog ever and I LOVE his personality so much...my big, goofy dog. Fudge is so smart and can outsmart Vern at every turn, very independent, but always makes sure I am ok and loves to be cuddled. They are both "perfect" in their own way and also have traits that make me realize that I am glad I don't have two Verns or two Fudges :) I think whatever dog you choose, will turn out to be the right dog for your family. Good luck in your search.
Hey Denise, congrats on at least getting the discussion open!! I think it would be helpful to know more specifics about Hunter's personality.  For me, Rosey is really high energy and while not THAT big at 44 lbs, I am thankful to have Bandit(ALD) who is way more calm, subdued and smaller as they tear thru the house..   Take a look too at the Multiple Doodle group, there were some discussions about this and boy vs. girl etc a while back.... Good Luck!!
I have two F1 Goldendoodles, they are as different as day and night, yet similiar in so many ways. raised in the same family, one is much more independent, the other more playful, both are affectionate in their own way, one a great watch dog,  the other seldom barks. We also have two children, both distinctly different, both with similiar characteristics.......................Every Doodle is an individual, F-1, F1B etc. Just like people....all are different!  All they want is love!
I have an F1 and an F1B.  They are different in personality but I agree with most opinions here that their differences are due more to the temperaments of their parents.  Mine are both very laid back but I wanted that trait and it was something that i looked for in the litters.  The parents play such an important part of the genetic makeup that I stress that when people ask me about the breed.  I tell them how wonderful the dogs are and then mention that not every doodle is laid back, or whatever trait, it is partially due to the parents that the breeder selected.  You can't tell when looking at my doodles which is the F1 and which is the F1B, but that is something else that I was looking for.  They both appear even in the retriever, poodle genetics.  People ask all the time is they are from the same litter.

WE HAVE A pOODLE, f1 AND f1B.  THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT AND ALL PERFECT. I HAPPEN TO AGREE WITH CAITLIN.

SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS, CAT GOT CAP LOCK STUCK...WAITING FOR NEW KEYBOARD TO ARRIVE.

Zoe is an F2B and I have to agree with Holly.  Zoe is more poodle than lab though in personality.  She's friendly but more guarded, is more goofy that layed back, can prance on her back legs as well and loves to retrieve.    I don't know any F1's personally, so I can't compare that way.  Overall, Zoe is very friendly, eager to please and very smart.

As the others said, I think a dood's personality is individual not generational though you will get more poodle traits the further you go.  I also, believe a dood's personality is molded by the love and guidance it's given.  Whichever you decide I'm sure you will fall instantly in love!

I'm going to side with the difference being the individual personality and not the generation.  We had a golden retriever mix (looked almost purebred) who was calm, gentle, easy going, just a perfect dog.  We frequently encountered people who said "I can't believe your dog!  My golden is so hyper I can't take him anywhere!"  I know some poodles who are yappy, snippy, and generally annoying, yet I know other poodles who are sweet-spirited, relaxed, and a joy to be with.  If there is such a difference within purebreds, how can one predict the personality of a mix :-)

As a breeder who has raised different generations as well as bred them I can tell you that the differences are not based upon the generation (as far as temperment) but as many have stated , based upon the parents, the environment, etc. The coats and body of the dog do vary somewhat...in an F1b litter you will have more curlier dogs then in an F1, and you tend to have more thinner builds sometimes too. You truly have to  evaluate each dog individually, regardless of breed. In any given litter (be it goldendoodle, F2b, poodle, Golden) you will have some more laid back, some more reserved, often one thats much more active . Where we see the biggest difference in a litter as a whole is in the parents. I have a VERY MELLOW girl, and i bred her with one of my mellow boys...now I dont have ANY dogs that are hyper but of course some are more energetic then others, and it was the QUIETEST litter I have ever had...WHen I breed one of my more vocal girls, she always has at least a few very vocal pups...so if anything the parents personality has more to do with it then their generation...

Good Luck with the hubby...you are definately making progress though!!!
