Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I come from a very doodley family: my sister got the first goldendoodle 4 yrs ago and since then my parents have a standard and mini and I have 2 standards.  Prior to Webster, I had my 2 pound puppy/rescue puppy for almost 16 years.  I never worried about what food I was feeding, changing the food, giving treats, giving table scraps (just a taste), etc.  Same thing with our family dogs we had growing up - and they were also just "mutts".

My mom has been telling me how her dogs are very sensitive to any change in food and I've noticed the same with Charlotte.  My sister's gd also has a sensitive tummy.  Webster doesn't seem AS sensitive but still somewhat.  Changes in food lead to diarrhea and stinky gas, even though I changed from a poorer quality chicken and rice to a higher quality chicken and rice.  The rare table scrap can also lead to an odorous evening. So my question is, is this common in doodles or just individual dogs?  Just curious what other DKers have experienced.

My F1 labradoodle had major tummy troubles...she, too, was put on rx dog food and as long as she ate that and nothing else she was good. We now have a multi-gen and have her on quality food. She does well with it. However, Santa brought her some Petco treats (looked and smelled just like vanilla sandwich cookies) and she started having diarrhea. Perhaps they were too rich for her...

Tori is sensitive to treats too... we had a trainer come once for an evaluation... she kept feeding her these little round - cheeze-it type treats (I forget the name)... she loved them.. but caused her to have VERY loose popp... I tossed them and stick to small pieces of bread, some fruit, and now rice Krispies....

Hi,

I'm in the UK with my doodle ozzie and the answer to your question is YES,Ozzie can only eat minceat(best steak) and beef heart, any treats or biscuits, dog or human one gives him the run's and gas which I think would run the national grid.

He is fine, healthy and has loads of energy, but on the lean side, he gets no carbs atall as this also upsets his tummy. As long as he doesn't sneak a biscuit or anything he's fine.

I lived round the Vet's for the first 12 months of his life,he's now 16months and I give him Lomitol if he has a bad bout,the Vet done all the test's which cost a fortune,and came up with IBS;

No special treatment so i'm just seeing how he goes, and so far he's fine. Lesley

Rosy has a VERRRRY sensitive stomach, after trial and error (and 2am potty calls) we've standardized on these rules (and dietary items) over the past year and a half:

Meals: Grain free Taste of the Wild food- water fowl variety

Treats: Grain free PCI Brand Chicken Nibbles

Treats: Grain free Smokehouse Brand Duck Chips (treats)

Treats: Grain Free Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet (L.I.D.) Potato and Duck mini treats

No treats before 12pm (Rosy throws up)

Rosy does not get any table scraps (OK everyone I can hear your collective awwwww, poor baby)- every once in a while she is faster than me in cleaning up a dropped human food item and especially loves nuts.  She doesn't seem to have problems when this happens but we don't take chances AND the best part is that she isn't a begging chowhound during our dinner time.

Hope this helps.  We've (mostly my husband) spent a lot of time diagnosing and trying to prevent Rosy's stomach issues and find that our standardizing on food and treats has helped tremendously.  Food and treats with grain in them also caused Rosy to scratch all the time so we figured she also has an allergy which can also cause stomach issues.

Jacqui... what is "PCI" brand... we are looking fro treats for Tori.. we too have to be careful that her tummy doesn't get upset... right now we really only give her bread and bagels or very toasted English muffins  - all of course in small pieces, but still would like to get her something else... thanks!

Hi Shelly- PCI Brand is the company that makes the Chicken Nibbles, their name is on the container.  If you are located in Northern California you can get these treats at An-Jan Pet Stores.  If not, here is a link to a description of the treats on a website you can prder from: http://www.palmdistributing.com/content/chicken-nibbles-225lb-canister
