Does anyone feed Earthborn Holistic dog foods?  Looking to switch my dogs to a new food. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The company is Midwestern Pet Foods distributed out of Indiana. They apparently make a range of pet and fowl foods, i.e. chicken feed. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But we would need to get a statement from them that their ingredients are not imported and that any fish meal they use in their formulas is not preserved with ethoxyquin.

The ingredients themselves look pretty good. I would go with the grain-free formulas, as the formulas which contain grain look very starch heavy.

Anything new on this?  Doggiefood.com is having a sale right now and it seems VERY reasonable.  We love Orijen but I would like a back up of grainfree product if it is comparable.  And why so much less expensive than Orijen?  Any help would be appreciated, Karen.  Thanks Linda and Lizzy

I would write or call the company and ask about the source of their ingredients, and if their fish meal is preserved with ehtoxyquin. If the answers to those questions are satisfactory, I would try it. If they start talking about proprietary information, forget this company.

Everything's less than Orijen, primarily because Orijen is the only company that I know only uses local sources for their ingredients, although there may be others of whichIi am not aware; this food seems to be priced in keeping with other grain-frees like TOTW, CORE, Wildreness, etc.  from what I can tell.

Thanks, I'll send them an e-mail and see what they say and let you know.
As always, Karen is our resident expert-I received very quick information from this company.  Orijen is still the gold standard for dog food.  This company does get all of its' ingredients in the US except for lamb meal from Australia, flaxseed from Canada and the Fish meal from a US supplier with tocopherols, the natural source of Vitamin E.  But the reason for the difference in price seems to be that they are only 38 % protein in their turkey/chicken,34% in their bison meat and the herring/salmon/whitefish is 34% protein. Orijen close to 70-80%.     This might be a good alternative for some, trying to cut costs, but I'll bow to Karen and get her thoughts.

Thank you for the compliments! But actually, Orijen is 38-40% protein if you look at the nutritional analysis info. That 70-80% on the front of the bags is by weight.

I'm going to add Earthborn to our Recommended Foods list, based on this information. It's always good when a company is prompt and forthcoming in their answers to consumer questions. I agree that Orijen is still the gold standard for dog kibble, but this is certainly a viable option. Thanks for doing the research Linda!

Yikes, my bad.  Only 38-40% and I thought .... the biggest problem I have is the Mini Schnauzer tends to get heavy and am I reading wrong or this too caloric for him.  We use the red meat or adult grain free for both and only feed Sam(30 lb) 1/2 cup, twice a day and Lizzy(53 lbs), 1 cup twice a day.  I add about a tbl of wellness canned for variety in each.

Maybe, being so much the same, I'll see if they like the sample coming-it could be a back-up to Orijen....
