Is my puppy getting dread locks?

Rooney's coat is amazing - when he moves it just floats, it is very beautiful.  But it is SO thick and has individual little curls that are seperate, kinda like dread locks are.  Also his fur is getting very long for a dog that only weighs 17 lbs.  What is going to happen when his adult coat starts coming in?  Should I trim a few inches off now?  His coat is 4 inches long.

We went to the groomers on Friday and she was able to handle the matting without shaving.  The dogs are looking pretty good.  Their coat is a bit short, but so much easier to deal with.  I love the Chris Christensen conditioners,which also help.  (The Day to Day that I use on them  in the shower...leave in a few minutes then rinse, and then the Ice on Ice spray on leave in detangler.) I have just uploaded a photo of my "babies" with their groomer, and then one that looks like they are bookends!

my puppy has the same coat. I bring him to get groomed every 5 weeks or so, and I have to brush him a few times a week. I just love how he looks and how he feels with a full coat so I think it's worth the up keep. I know many people though who give their dogs hair cuts so they are lower maintenance.  It is all up to you.

I think you can wait a little longer. Around 6-8 months is when we had to have Peri trimmed back - it was just too much (and she is only an f1 - doesn't shed, but probably doesn't matt as much as your Rooney).

Rooney will be six months on Feb. 17 and so far he isn't matting at all except for a couple little ones right under his chin.  So we'll leave it long for another month and then here in FL it will get too hot.

I am interested to see who will be the first to have a corded doodle.  I have the time, but need some more guidance as to exactly what to do to get that corded look.   We have a couple of long trips planned, so maybe I will wait until this summer to really start the cording.  In the meanwhile, just making sure he does not develop any mats is enough.
