Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My 11 month old Goldendoodle, Manny recently started shedding like CRAZY!! He used to shed a tiny bit here and there, but within the last few weeks it is non-stop. It looks almost like puppy hair but I though he had already shed all of that. We brush him daily, every-other day at the very least with a slicker brush and we have to empty it 3 or 4 times per brushing. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if so does it stop? I spoke to a few people who own goldendoodles at his daycare and they said they have heard of goldendoodles "blowing their coat" to a degree. Thanks!!

Is he a first generation goldendoodle? He may have inherited the shedding coat of a golden retriever if he is!
Yes, he is. Yikes!! Thank you!!

Yup! That might be it then! Some first generation doodles inherit shedding coats, some get light shedding coats, and some get the low- to no- shedding coats.

My multi-gen australian labradoodle has a low-shedding coat but she did shed some clumps between puppy coat and adult coat.

I've been around golden retriever puppies, though, and none of them shed a lot while they were growing up. It always started after the adult coat all came in, around 10 months. Of course I might be wrong!
Thank you all so much!  I appreciate any words of wisdom! This is my first dog that I have had on my own so it  is a great learning experience for me. I researched goldendoodles for a while before choosing my puppy and I realized that there was a possibility of shedding but it just worries me now because it just started so suddenly. Some "clumps" like a poodle sheds but also a lot of just hair also, it seems more fuzzy than the rest of his coat as that is getting more woolly I guess you could say. His hair did change color as he got older, when I first got him he was a lighter cream and now he is darker, not red or apricot but quite a bit darker than he was when I got him, I thought that was the coat change! Thank you again for your help!
My Lilly is an F1 and she sheds more now then she ever did.  Each year I think she got worse ,she is now 2 1/2. I can brush and brush her and I don't get much out but it gathers like "tumbleweed" in my kitchen corners.

Do you see his hair all over the place? On clothes, furniture, drapery, carpet, etc? Or do you only notice it when he's being brushed?  When I brush Webster I get a couple brushfuls in the slicker brush but I don't notice hair on anything.  I do have the tumbleweeds that gather in corners and under furniture.  When Webster was about Manny's age, his coat got very thick and hard to brush - it would wear out my wrist trying to give a thorough brushing - and I would get several brushfuls but I still didn't notice much hair around the house.  Now his hair is easier to brush (almost 2 yrs old).  I do think that the shorter the hair is kept, the less shedding is noticable.

There is a group you could join called "Shedding Doodle's"  my Hunter could be the poster dog LOL  She has shed pretty much since day one.  She is an F1 Goldendoodle also, I have noticed a decreased since I have been religiously giving her 1000mg of Evening Primrose Oil a day.  I do see much less fur all over in the summer when I shave her to but with as cold as it is here she needs her fur coat for the winter.  Unfortunately, you might just have to get used to the fur!  My advise buy the Dyson vacume for pets and by stock in those tape lint rollers ;-)
In December, Scooby went through the same thing at 9 months old. It lasted about a month, and now he sheds just a little like he used to.
Yes, the hair is all over, everywhere! I feel like I even get hair balls in MY throat from it!  Where do you find the Evening Primrose Oil? I have also heard of some sort of coconut oil/milk that is supposed to help with shedding too, but I have not tried it yet. I am trying to be patient to see if it is just a phase but I can't seem to keep up with all the vacuuming now. I get the hairball "tumble weeds" too! It seems as if when I vacuum them up they are back by the time I put the vacuum away. I am nervous to give him anything as he has had a VERY sensitive stomach from day one and with in the last couple of months this has been the longest we have gone with out digestive issues so that is why I am hesitant to start him on anything. @ Diane & Scooby, did you notice a difference in the hair that Scooby was shedding? Mannys seems to be very fuzzy and his coat seems to be getting more woolly so I am hoping it may be puppy hair eventhough it seems a bit late for that?? @ Denise & Hunter, I swear, out doodles could be Twins!! Same coloring and everything! Thank you all!!!

I found Evening Primrose Oil at Whole Foods Body.  But I give Peri 500mg tablets, which are harder to find than the 1000mg tablets - those are at Kroger, Walmart, you name it.  They might help.....however, your doodle will probably always shed.

Peri did shed while her adult coat came in, but now she doesn't shed.  We never had hair "everywhere" though!  Your doodle is adorable.

One of my doodles does not shed, and the other, well, let's just say that we have a dog hair carpet at our house....
