Allergy Test Results

Hi,

 

My allergist tested me for dog dander and it came up negative, which I thought it would because I've never been allergic to dogs.  She still wants me to take some lab tests for dander.  She said I couldn't be allergic to my dog if I'm not allergic to other dogs.  I hope that's true, although when I play with her, my eyes itch and water.  Thanks for all your comments and feedback!

This is good news but it sounds like it wasn't too surprising for you! Even if you had tested as allergic to dogs on test it would not mean that you are allergic to your doodle. I am allergic to dogs in general but not to Tara.  So I think it is dog specific as to whether one will react or not.

 

But you still have a mystery. Did she test you for molds or any other allergens that Lexie could be bringing in on her coat? Please continue to keep us posted! I love a good mystery!!

Could it possibly be the shampoo you bath Lexie in?  Just going out on a limb.  I was allergic (of all things) to the baby lotion I used on my daughter when she was a baby.

I don't believe I am allergic to my dogs either but when they go outside in the fall and spring, they drag pollen back in with them.  Some of what they bring in makes me sneeze and my eyes itch.  Could it be something she is getting from outside that is causing you to react?

No plants, trees, etc. when Lexie's outside. (trying to get tested for other things, molds, etc. she could be bringing in)  I live in a condo so not much for her to get into and it's very cold here in MI so everything is pretty much dead right now.

In your other post, you mentioned that in the kitchen you are fine and in the living room when you play with Lexie is when/where you start having a reaction. 

Living rooms can have furniture or pillows with down feathers, more dust in carpets/rugs, and in some cases, exhaust from the oil burner which goes through the fireplace/chimney. 

People can have reactions to new carpet with formaldhyde or new couches with flame retardant chemicals.

Here in California there is lots and lots of plant life going on. I forgot that where you are there isn't pollen, etc right now.

I had issues somewhat similar to yours.  Some dogs I had no reaction to, and others I would break out in itchy itchy hives.  It did not seem to be breed or age specific.  After a lot of memory jogging, it appeared to be the dog's saliva that was causing my problems.  So if I'm going to be around a dog with whom I am not familiar, I try to wear long sleeves and pants, and keep it away from my face if he is a licker.
