Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I am wondering if anyone has had their ALD genetically tested to find out what mix of breeds are present in their dood?  I am considering having Tara testing more for the fun of it than anything else :).

Just wondering if anyone else has tried it?

There was a lot of varied breeding done with the ALDs, but the American labradoodles and goldendoodles are pretty straight forward on their parentage. We knew the parents, or at least the breeders did, with our doodles, but the ALD is a little different. You won't see any cocker spaniels in American doodles, and only now are miniature poodles being bred for smaller doodles. Breeding is sooooo interesting. Do you think the ALD will be a recognized breed before the American doodles?
Ricki,
Before I came in to answer this I had been on so many sites today on my iphone so it is hard to trace all this information but this might give some incite into your results
About Poodles: As the 1800s came to a close, the Corded Poodle enjoyed a successful stretch in popularity. Early dog shows often highlighted the corded coat of the Poodle. The act eventually sparked a heated debate as to whether Corded Poodles and the curly variety were part of the same family yet separate breeds. It was later surmised that the coat of a Poodle didn’t mean it carried enough criteria to deem it a different class of the breed.

Some felt the Poodle may have been crossed with a Puli or Komodor somewhere along the lines in Europe for a period of time. So, maybe................ this is what is showing up in Tara's report.

There are two types of poodle coat but as to why is controversial. So there we have it..... for now, I will say Spud IS a Spudooley PuliPoodleDoodle
Wow! Talk about a rare and exotic breed!!!!

That is fascinating about the possible Puli/Poodle connection. HOWEVER, I am afraid I have to blow your theory apart about Tara. The testing company states that they can't detect breeds past 3 generations back AND they also said that Tara was at LEAST 25% Puli! If that were the case, she should have a coat like your Spudooley PuliPoodleDoodle!!!

BUT on the other hand SOMETHING made that Puli gene show up?????

I can't wait to see the dreads and the beads!!
Tara and Spud should be wearing Rasta colors - weave red, green, yellow ribbons in the cords? Ned says he is up for a bit of Bob Marley when he is being groomed!
Hey, Neds on board!!! Can a member of the Naked Doodle Club wear ribbons?
Ned says ribbons are very pretty on girlie types and if you insisted, he would let you weave some on him.
I've been following Doodle breeding for about 7-8 years now. I lurk on a number of boards and listen in on conversation between breeders. I found out early on that the original Australian breeders, Teagan Park and Rutland Manor, were not always on the up and up with their breeding practices. Accurate breeding records were not kept. Dogs of questionable pedigree were purchased from other high volume breeders and in at least one documented case, a dog was picked up from a shelter and put into the Rutland Manor breeding program. On top of this, pedigrees on breeding dogs were often inaccurate and in some cases made up or falsified.

Pulis, when uncorded and brushed out, look an awful lot like ALDs or Cockapoos. Could it be that some Pulis were purchased, mistakenly identified as Cockapoos or Poodles and put into the Rutland Manor breeding program?

As far as no Lab goes, I think many ALD owners are finding out that there is no Lab in their Labradoodles. Rutland Manor bred Cockapoos before they saw that breeding Labradoodles was more profitable. There is good evidence that many of the ALD lines today never contained Labs and that are genetically Cockapoos or even as much as 85% or more Poodle.

If you have never seen the Rutland Manor Exposed site, it is worth reading.

Thank you, Carol, for this information. Finding out about the Puli (and seeing the darling photo) might explain some of the coat issues. I think that if someone was looking for status by having a designer dog made popular by some celebrities, they might be sorely disappointed. However, if someone just fell in love with a big goofy smile, it doesn't matter what the true background is. When I met my first doodle, it was the color and the look I chased (literally) down the street to find out about. And that was a small guy. The full-size doods are the most visually impressive and who could resist them - whatever mix they might be.
My daughter (the lab owner) and I were just having a conversation last night where she said she sees NO lab in Ned - maybe so, but I didn't get him because of his heritage, but because he was silly, princely, charming Ned.
This whole thread has given me a good laugh, especially the pics of the Pulli and the Poodles with dreadlocks.  I think this whole test thing is a great money spinner......

Well, I have to agree with you on the money spinner comment!! LOL!!  If you enjoyed this thread here is another discussion that spun off of it.  Joanne was inspired by the Puli's to attempt to cord her doodle:

Be prepared for a little surprise if you get your ALD tested.  Many of the ALDs have a heritage from Tegan and Rutlands and they did breed in Puli and Cocker Spaniel (maybe to get a smaller dog??).  I can definitely see the Puli in my dog, but not the Lab.  I had an American bred Labradoodle and his tail was very thick and strong (like a lab), not curly like a Puli.  It really doesn't matter to me, because I will not breed or show my dog.   However, when I registered him at Obedience School, I said he was a Labradoodle and they put down a Lab Mix.  When it was time to pass out certificates, they had me signed up with a Lab and they took one look at him and said "That's not a lab."  So, there is some confusion and learning to be done by all of us about the nature of doodles.
