Well Rufus was just neutered today. He seems so spacey he keeps pacing and staring  he has the cone on I just get nervous he is going tear them open hopefully he heels quick

Well it's been a sleepless night for both of us Rufus was up and down every two hours  ?? He was 
Wimpering on and off so brought him outside at 4am he wanted to run but had him on the leash no pee and brought him back in fed him with out the collar but after he ate and drank he went right for the stiches I checked the the
 They looked flat  so I am guessing so far so good 13 more days to go :(

I do sympathise! Dylan was neutered 2 weeks ago. He can  be a bit of a handful so we knew we might be in for a rocky road and in fact the vets called us two hours earlier than planned to say he was attemptng to dig his way out of the kennel he was in so could we please come and fetch him.

He didn't know what to do with himself in the car and when he was home he seemed to stumble about as if drunk. Everytime he lied down he seemed to wince but the vet assured us he couldn't be in pain because of the pain drugs he had but was more likely just the strange sensation of something not quite right..He ended out finally crashing out on our bed and slept for hours.

We should really have known better but we didn't persevere with the cone but tried him in a pair of shorts with his tail sticking out of the fly. Within hours of the second day, despite both me and hubby being home with him, he had removed his stitches! The vet gave him a couple more days (with cone firmly in place! and a good telling off for us) but the wound wouldn't close so he was restitched under sedation.

He did eventually get used to the cone and in barged through the house as if it wasn't there. We both have the bruises to show for it. BUT, he is now fully recovered, stitches were removed on Monday and he is back to his usual self.

I think that its us owners who suffer with the guilt and give in when it comes to these cones. Dylan needed two in the end as he tore one barging through the door into the vets because he was so keen to get in (amazingly!!). These doddles recover much more quickly than us from the trauma and move on!

Good luck in whatever you try - maybe ther are more alternatives available to you and I really hope they work out

Thanks  I know he wants to be everywhere we are and me telling to lay down is like talking to a wall when can they take the cone off I was told 14 day does males  have a shorter healing time ??  He has his last pain meds tommorow  so  I think I am having more anxiety than he is with this lol

Oh, poor guy.  Murphy hated the cone too, and also was pretty "spacey" when he first came home.  We ended up getting him the soft cone, and he did better with that.  Hang in there, he'll be back to normal in a couple of days.

I wonder if the "Belly Band" would work for neutering?  This is just the little wide band that wraps around little boy doggies to keep them from marking in the house.  Almost seems like it might work for this as well.  You can get them at any Pet supply place.

Brinkley was neutered four months ago.  He was very spacey when I picked him up.  I actually had to call a neighbor to help me get him out of the car because each time I'd open the back door, he'd then go to the other side of the backseat and press himself up against the other door.  Brinkley didn't want to lay down either for awhile.  He just stood there until the meds wore off a bit... then he slept through the entire night.  I vaugly remember him not peeing much the first night because of course he hadn't had any food and water prior to surgery.  It took Brinkley about 2 days to totally get used to the cone and then it was fine.  We did leave it on for the full 14 days.  We attempted to take it off once on day 10.  After 10 minutes he started bleeding b/c he was licking so on went the cone for another 4 days.  By the end that cone stunk and so did Brinkley-- I would take the cone off and wash it and I'd wipe Brinkley down with doggie wipes but by the end nothing helped. 

 

Good luck.  You will get through it.  But like you, i was glad I took off a few days as well.
