Oh no! I'm so scared, Bonne Bouche has had a bit of blood at the end of his soft stools. I need some help from the DK crew. Last night was the first night off of his "preventative" Albon 7day medication that the breeder started him on. So he's been off that for about 36 hours now.

Last night, BB had a big poop mostly solid with some liquid at the end about 20 minutes before dinnertime. We fed 1 cup of food right around 7, and he didnt make a BM afterwards. Even after several walkings.

We knew before bed when he didnt have a BM since dinner that he'd wake us in the middle of the night (hadn't happened yet). He did, about 3:30 DH got up and took him out. Even though he was right in front of the door, he couldn't hold it and had a big mostly soft stool, took a few steps and a few dribbles of liquid. Then outside a pee and more mostly solid poop.

This morning at 7ish, was very similar. DH brought him to the door and he pounced on the door as he was taught, but as he was opening the door BB  squatted to produce some liquidy soft "soft serve"-like poo with a "pinhead drop" size of red at the end. He pounced on the door 10 minutes later and so I took him out, but he could only squeeze out a few drops of liquid. We were very worried and sad for him at this point!

We fed him his morning breakfast after about 7:30 and he only ate half. (at this point I started to get very worried!) after about 15 mins he looked at the door so I took him out. Pee and Poop. This time the poop was very soft, and had a few drops of liquid at the end, with a drop of red.

He came back in and seemed mostly fine. Played a little, drank some water, and within the hour finished his breakfast. He seemed alert mostly, if not slightly more tired than normal. Eyes seem bright. He's drinking a normal amount, which is good. He's been a bit more sleepy than normal. (my husband suggests if he was up last night with intestinal discomefort, he may just be making that up), Also we did have the time change, so his "clock" may be slightly off.

Last thing I want to mention - Saturday and Sunday we took him for a nice long walk in the back woods behind our house. Its mostly secluded, and only a few other people go back there. He LOVED it! We thought since it was essentially private that it would be safe.

There is a creek back there that runs through it, and at one point he picked up what we thought was a stick but instead was a dead crayfish. My husband thinks this may be the culpret. I also think it may be that he is still getting used to changing over food from Iams to TOTW. We are trying to do it slowly, but maybe not slowly enough? Now we are on a 25/75 TOTW mix, which we did over the period of 8 days.

DK community - Are we over-reacting? I called the vet, and she said we can have an apt for 3:45 today. I can cancel it if we feel he doesnt need it whe the time rolls around. If emergency, we could probably move it forward, too. What do you think?

BB has had the vaccine for Giardia, and was wormed at the breeders. He's had his 9week shot (Duramune Max 5), that was actually administered on the day we picked him up from the breeder. When we went to the vet Wedneday, she did a Fecal, which he tested negative for, and then told us she wasn't surprised since he was on Albon that she'd be surprised that anything would show up.

He was just napping for a bit and now is up and about playing with a milk jug. We really do love him so much already!!!

Thank you, Adina, I wasn't sure how to fix this!

Please let us know how he's doing the next couple of days. I'd personally take him in to the vet but that's just me. I'm deathly afraid of Parvo and bloody stool is one of the first symptoms of Parvo so anything resembling blood in runny poop will have me running to the vet

Diarrhea is one thing and can be common in young puppies and can be brought on by changing food, a new home, stress, traveling etc... it's just the blood at the end is the part that has me worried for you. At least if you take him to the vet and have a fecal or blood test done on him it would ease your mind and then you'd feel more comfortable starting a home remedy for the diarrhea.

I lost a young puppy to parvo when I was 17 years old and it was horrible and it all started with bloody Diarrhea so maybe I'm over exaggerating here but after researching the causes of bloody diarrhea online.. I was unable to find anything that made me feel better.

Some known Causes can be Parvovirus, Giardia, Poison, Foreign Object, Bacteria, Parasites.

Please read this: http://leerburg.com/diarrhea.htm

Once your sure it's just normal diarrhea I would recommend the following regime:

Withhold food (but not water) for 24 hours (12 hours for young puppies) to give your dog's digestive system a rest. Then feed him a bland diet of 50% boiled rice and 50% chicken or 50/50 boiled rice and cooked hamburger for the next two to three days. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve seek advice from your vet. You can also try canned pumpkin.

We are keeping an insanely close eye on him. Thank you so much for your care and honest feedback.

We got the fecal test done to rule out GIardia and Coccidia. So we feel much better about that. His poop was much better immediately after the rice diet. I saw the link you posted earlier in my search. He most easily falls into the pudding classificaiton. I worried that it was the last category, but it looks like its mostly been pudding, and not the explosive and watery kind. If it does seem to turn out to that, or doesn't improve in a day or so, back we'll go. He is drinking a lot, has an appetite like normal, and is acting pretty normally.

Thanks for your suggestions on diet, that is exactly what we will be doing, DH is at the grocery store now picking up the ingredients.

How is your puppy today? I'm so happy to hear you had the fecal done and it was clear for GIardia and Coccidia. I know the vet can be so damn expensive. It's a thin line sometimes deciding to take them in or keeping them home to see if it works itself out with a home remedy. It's unfortunate that we're forced to make these hard decisions based on money but a trip to the vet can costs upwards of $100 bucks by the time you walk out the door and that's just for a shot and a check up..!!

I'm just happy to hear you took him in and I do highly recommend taking away the food for at least 12 hours if not longer before starting the rice and hamburger or rice and chicken...because it does work! :)

Things look better, but not back to normal, just yet. We're doing Rice and Chicken, over several small meals.

BoBou is very hungry, all the time, we really just couldn't justify a fast any longer than his normal dinner to breakfast fast.

He had 1/2 cup R&C for breakfast at 7am with a tablespoon of yogurt and tablespoon of pumpkin. He then had 1/2 cup R&C with Pumpkin at 9, 11, and a full cup at 2:30. We'll also feed again probably 3 more times.

His poop was pumpkin colored, and much more solid. Still fairly loose, and a slight drop of blood at the end.

All other behavior is normal, and no other symptoms, so we realy do think he just got into something, the antibotics upset his digestive system, or we tried to transition over his food to quickly. Either way we're keeping a close eye on him and will immediately take him to a vet should anything get worse, or if his symptoms done't further improve by tomorrow.

My puppy started having a bit of diarrhea last night and it continued today. Spring is here and the snow is thawing so I figured it must be something she picked up off the ground outside (it's amazing how much crap is under all that snow!). I logged in so I could post a question about it and saw yours. I'm so glad I could follow this string of emails. I'm going to try the rice, chicken and pumpkin diet tomorrow and see if things get better. I hope little Bonne Bouche is feeling better!!

He is doing much better, I have a thread in the food group that may be of interest to you:

The people here are so knowledgeable! I don't know what I'd do without DK!

I know! love DK!
Carla, how is BB's poo situation? I came home to quite a mess from Sophie. She had really bad diarrhea and she made a huge mess in her crate. She had never done that before. She was trying to lick it up, I think she thought she would get in trouble or something. I felt so awful for her I wanted to cry. I quickly cleaned her off in the tub and took her outside where she had two more rounds of runny diarrhea. My poor puppy! I got her on meds and a the doctor told me to do the chicken and rice thing, which I'm doing. Anyway, I was wondering how the chicken/rice diet worked for BB and if he's all better...

Chicken and rice is going very well for us. I also think the pumpkin is working wonders. This morning he had a great poop! Still slightly looser than I'd like but solid and a nice large quantity, color, etc.

What kind of meds did the vet put Sophie on? Did he diagnose her with anything or just give her meds as a caution?

BB licks himself like a cat, does Sophie? I think it is just because he likes to be clean and that is the best way to do it!

Glad BB is is better, I hope is poop is back to normal soon.

They took a fecal sample from her and are doing an analysis. I haven't heard back yet. they put her on two meds, one is panacur granules, the other is metronidazole. I asked about the pumpkin but she said not to because we want to rule out food allergies (she also scratches an awful lot) and adding in new foods right now might complicate things. Her poop this morning was a pile of light coloured mush, but at least it wasn't pure liquid like last night. We have a follow up appt on tuesday.

She licks herself clean all the time. I'm actually taking her to the groomers this aft for an introductory puppy groomig session. I'm hoping to get her used to the bath because last night I really struggled to simply rinse her off. She needs a proper cleaning.

She also chases her tail a lot, sooo cute. I love my puppy!

Hey all, thanks so much for the help!

BoBou just had a PERFECT poop! His best yet! Its odd and a bit unsettling how happy I am about poop, but I am!!!!!

Go BoBou!!!
