Fergie is my first doodle and we all love her to death but she needs a playmate. She's a wonderful very calm dog. We go for a 3 mile walk everymorning. She runs and plays on the county trail and loves it. The rest of the day she pretty much just lays around. She needs a playmate. My husband doesn't think so. Any hints on convincing him.
I think 2 dogs are great! But I believe, from experience, it is better to have one for at least a year and then add another puppy. Two puppies together can reek havac on anything!!!
I agree that two of any species is a good thing. Think Noah's Arc. Most things come in pairs, like shoes, gloves, etc. I think of it as if I was the only human on earth, I would want to have someone to be able to relate to. So when I adopted my cats, I got two from the same litter. As for dogs, we have four.
We just had a family buy a puppy from us who went through the same issue. They already had one dog and really wanted a second but the husband didn't think they needed another pup. The way they did it was the wife and three kids came over and picked out their favorites. Each had their own favorite of course. Then they went home and the kids just bombarded their dad with discussions about how cute their favorite puppy was, every day for a week straight.
After church the following week, the wife decided to make a detour to our house, saying that they had promised they would stop by. The husband basically had no way of getting out of it. So his daughters and wife showed him their favorite puppies first hand. They kept asking which one was his favorite and he finally picked one that had been sleeping in his lap. It just so happened that it was the same puppy I thought would be the best fit for the family. The wife and kids agreed with him that he was a great puppy and asked their dad what he would name the pup. He came up with a name and the rest is history.
Cayenne is the same way. Loves walks, loves playing but otherwise she looks bored and depressed though occasionally will play all by herself. I want another dog too, so I can't wait to hear the responses. My guy, like yours, doesn't see the need. I do hear other dog owners say that that's just what dogs do; play and lay.
Oh I've been here before!!!! I NEVER had two dogs before and felt the same about my Mocha....she just LOVED to play with children and our neighbor dog....she would just sit by the window and whine to go out. So..... I started with the begging and suttle hints...but then MADE A DEAL. I said I would have a garage sale to earn the money - plus he got what he wanted which was for me to get rid of stuff..... it worked out great. So just find something HE really wants and compromise...once you get the new baby home (cause I know you will)....he will love it just as he does your current pooch.
and it is TRUE what they say - the 2nd is sooo much easier. My Ozzie is very well behaved...he never has time to get into any trouble because he is too busy hanging out with Mocha...they are GREAT friends!! (Actually 1/2 siblings - they have the same mommy)

Rozee was 14 months old when we got Bella - second Goldendoodle. It was THE BEST thing we have ever done. Rozee did 90% of the potty training of Bella and Bella really kept Rozee busy playing. Having two is 100% easier than having just one. When Bella gets a little nuts and starts barking or being a pain Rozee is right there to calm her down or guide her out the doggie door to go for a run around the yard. Really gives us a break. Rozee has been great at teaching Bella how to leash-walk, sit, stay, down and "no bark". Having Bella around has made Rozee so happy and has given her a "job". I would highly recommend a second dog ASAP!
Well I solved it. Last week Fergie and I were on the computer when the phone rang. It was the snowmobile man asking me to give a msg to DH that "he had a quote for the studs for the NEW machine". I said - "really, I think I must owe you a case of beer or something." I had no idea about this new machine that was coming. Anyway - I guess I'm going to call my new puppy "Ski-Doo". All is happy!
I had a similar one - I came home to 2 4-wheelers before my dogs.... I keep telling him...even with 2 doodles...fence....training...I still have some more spending to do!! LOL!!
We just got our second puppy two months ago. I found the one I wanted on the internet and emailed a picture of it to my husband.... he was convinced. Well anyway, it has been sooooo ... good for our older dog. He was getting very quiet and loosing his puppiness. Now after two months they are best buds and and Nimbus is his old vigorous self.
