Hello!    I 'd like to switch my 5 mo old doodles puppy kibble (Nutro Puppy)  to a grain free diet (reading about how this is more nutritious and beneficial), i'm even thinking of adding slowly some raw foods. I'm new at all of this.     It took a while for our new pup Ayla to get firmer stools, since the new food change when we first had her, plus gigardia meds, and FortiFlora  to help with her stool.

I'm interested to know what anyone's dog food diet is and the outcome:  firm or not so firm stools?

Thanks!

You will find that every dog is different.  Take my Allie for instance.  She is the Queen of poop.  When we brought her home, we had her on Vet recommended Science Diet (ha!) Then we changed her to Canidae, she ended up with diarrhea.  Looking back now, it was probably the junky treats we were feeding her.  So we switched to California Naturals and she became constipated, we switched to her to Orijen and that caused her to be constipated, so we started transitioning her to Fromm and at about 3/4 Fromm and 1/4 Orijen her poop was PERFECT!!!  So we did that for a few months, and then when I got sick of getting 2 different bags of dog food for ONE 45 pound dog, I stopped giving her the Orijen, and her poops are perfect!  I love perfect poop!!!!  LOL.

Thanks for your reply Kim & Allie!    Yes, i never thought the day would come- that i'd looking forward to picking up after firm poop in the future!!!!     :)      Here's to hoping!!   I will look into Fromm-   if i can get that here.   Thanks again!

I would wait until others reply before settling on the food. I think that most dogs do better on grain free, but I'm not 100% sure. My Allie does NOTHING like "most dogs!!!!"
We use Orijen puppy and our dog has nice firm stools.  All Orijen is grain-free I believe.  Fromm and Orijen are the most highly recommended on DK.  Both are excellent, but it may depend on your dog to see which she does better on.
Thanks everyone on your recommendations!   Have a great Saint Patrick's Day! And a great weekend, too!  :)

As others said, grain vs. grain-free depends on your puppy.  Grain works well for my Peri. She is on Fromm and we LOVE it because there are about 6 different flavors that you can rotate between and it shouldn't upset the stomach.  Peri loves pork & applesauce, salmon, chicken, ....you get the idea!

Since you are on Nutro right now, maybe integrate Fromm if you can find it? Since Nutro has grains, you might want to try a healthy grain food first. Doesn't work, try Orijen...just make sure you transition slowly. 25% new, 75% Nutro, then ramp up slowly to new food.
