Another Perspective On "Doodle Bashing"- Do You "Bash" Poodles?
On every doodle forum I have seen, there are lengthy discussions about the "anti-doodle" sentiment, hurt feelings about someone's doodle being called a mutt, criticism of designer dogs, etc. I can certainly understand being insulted by this. But stop and think for a moment..have YOU ever made a derogatory statement about poodles?
I lived with purebred poodles for 47 years before I got Jack.
There were outstanding dogs...brilliant, playful, wonderful with children, clean & easy to train. They did not have "attitudes". (Well, except for my show dog.)Yet I continue to hear derogatory remarks made about poodles, a lot of them from doodle owners. Just yesterday, I was speaking to a potential IDOG adopter about her reasons for wanting a doodle. She mentioned the shedding/allergy thing. When I asked her if she had considered a standard poodle, she made that "ech" sound, and then the inevitable "My husband doesn't like "foo foo" dogs." At the vet's office the other day, there was a woman with an F1B that looked exactly like a standard poodle, but with a big plumy tail. We got into a doodle discussion, and she too, was negative about poodles and their 'attitudes'. But her own dog is 75% poodle!
How can you love your doodle but dislike at least half of his parentage? I am sure the breeders and others here who own poodles will agree on what wonderful dogs they are. When I had my miniature, there were actually people who said things like "that's not a real dog", etc. At least half of the doodle owners I have personally met have remarked that they didn't like poodles, and then went on to comment on attitude, hyper, foo-foo, etc. If you were a poodle owner and heard this type of thing from people who then want a dog with half or more of your dog's genetics, wouldn't you be angry too? Might you not become prejudiced against all "poodle mix" dogs & those who breed them?
It is perfectly fine to prefer one type of dog to another, and it is perfectly fine to base those feelings on looks. I myself think doodles are cuter than poodles for one main reason...they have broader snouts and bigger noses, and I love the shaggy dog look, too. I dislike the appearance of pugs, shar-peis, chihuahuas, and many other breeds. But I don't say so to their owners.
Just a little food for thought...have you ever made a disparaging remark about poodles? If we want to help stop the "doodle bashing" that many of us complain about, maybe some of us need to start by adjusting our own attitudes. :-)

I like poodles quite a bit! I almost always admire a standard and compliment it's owner when i see one!
I just like the doodle look better and I'm not one for the grooming requirements of the poodle.
If it were easy to keep poodle hair longer...I'd consider one, but as it is one either has to keep them clipped short or in one of various hairstyles that can look silly (sometimes regal =) but mostly silly)
I still think they are pretty and like their personalities--from what i've seen they are bouncy and comical. maybe someday ... but I know Clark doesn't like the 100% poodle look.
I agree with you on the broader snout, nose, shaggy =)

I'm not saying everyone should like poodles or has to justify their reasons...I just wanted to point out that as owners of dogs who owe a great part of their heritage to poodles, some of us maybe need to think about the comments they have made re: poodles before they get insulted about people who disparage our doodles. :-))

Yes, I understand your intent. And I agree with it. I too find some breeds very unattractive but I would NEVER say that to a person who owned the breed. And yes...thanks to the poodle we have doodles! So it is ridiculous to say rude/nasty things about them.

If you google a "red hunting poodles" there is a breeder with gorgeous hunting poodles. No at all the foo-foo dog men usually think of. I think these dogs would make a great breeding dog for the doodles. Buy the way, does anyone out there hunt with their doodles? Oops, that is another subject.
Anyway, I really do like poodles only agree about the shaggy look. But, thank God for poodles or we wouldn't have doodles!

I am migrating from golden retrievers to poodles via doodles... never thought I'd like the poodle traits other than the non-shedding aspect, but I've completely changed my mind, and my next dog will be a 100% purebreed standard poodle! Someone I met at the park asked me: why ruin a perfect dog by cross-breeding it; and I thought he had a point, though I love the shaggy-looking doodles. So I think it comes down to personal preference and an open mind towards others who may not share your views and opinions. Tolerance is key; an "I'm superior" attitude and negative comments ala "foo foo" never gets you anywhere in life anyway - and just like with humans, it's the inside beauty of the dog that counts anyway ;)

I agree completely. Many people do not know that originally, poodles (who are German not French, although they are the national dog of France) were all black standards, and were used as hunting dogs, mainly to retrieve water fowl...hence, the water resistant coats. Their heritage is sport and work, not at all "foo-foo", LOL!

Actually the first ancestors of the Poodle were bred in Rome......They were brought to Gerrmany as a novelty and consequently bred into what we now call the Poodle....

The word Poodle is from the German word Puddlin...which translates into something that implies "dog that likes to jump in puddles".....

Incidently, I was also not a fan of Poodles.......My aunt had mini's when I was growing up and they were hyper, nervous, yappy, bad mannered and annoying little dogs......It's only now that I have a Doodle ( and a mini/medium as a matter of fact who is very "poodley" looking..) that I have come to adore Poodles...I realized that my aunts dogs were wretched little creatures because of her!..lol....not because of the breed.....I do prefer the shaggyness of the doodle as well as the bone structure.....Blake may be "poodley" but he has excellent bone....not as frail and thin as a poodle....a bit sturdier....
