My two year old daughter, or just A two year old. Like others mentioned, they are still pretty fearless so they are not as nervous as say my five year old. My daughter will just jump and run around, then does these squeals, giggles and he just thinks she's the best toy that ever existed. She laughs when he bites her butt and pants and keeps making noises. Then she'll roll around on the floor laughing and being nutty with him. She is like the best puppy toy that I am sure could ever exist for him. It's exhausting trying to explain to a two year why we can't do this. She'll be three in May, so maybe it will click. Ha! Wishful thinking. She is getting better though and is great with "No bite" most of the time and then giving him a toy, but sometimes they get all wound up together. We had her practice the tree this morning and by the third tree, Henry DID realize she would not play with him when he was biting at her pants and she would give him a toy.
So, all in all, it's going good. I couldn't help but laugh for a minute watching them play this morning but then quick ended it with some tree and trying to teach Henry this is not how we play. I told my daughter we have a "No running" rule for the moment. So, we are really trying here. He really is doing much better. We've also accepted this is part of his phase, so we need to stay calm. Also, if he won't stop even after we tell him too a few times, we all cease play time.
He is doing awesome though. He has sit and down commands down pat. It's so cute. I can't even believe he has learned them this soon. We are working on Leave it and Stay now too, take it up a notch. :) I'm such a proud Momma!

i watched a video on teaching dogs not to bite yesterday that said you have to be really careful with this sort of thing with little kids and puppies. that it can be reinforcing the biting behavior. it does sound cute but maybe it will cause problems later?
Yep, I know that. That is why we are training both the puppy AND the two year old, not sure if you read the whole post. :) Sometimes you have to laugh through the frustration.
Thanks for the video and link. I am in process of reading about clicker training and maybe giving it a go. Seems promising, I just am nervous about locking myself to a clicker full time.
I just did another session with my daughter and her working on the tree and putting a toy in his mouth. It really is amazing how quick they learn. Just from this morning, he stops almost immediatelynow, the biting the butt/pans/shirt hem when she goes into the tree. They are working together. LOL
I can visualize such a cute scene. You've got you're hands full with a new pup and a two year old! But they will grow up together and that is the best! I did the same with a Golden Retriever pup years ago with my two sons. They can't wait to own a Lab when they have the time to give a pet but they both are very skeptical about the ALD...I can't wait for them to see what a wonderful breed it is!
How old are they now? We had Labs growing up. The one I remember much more as he was from when I was like age 6 to 18. He was SUCH a good dog, his name was Blue. They are just so rambunctious for the first couple years, but so worth it. I just know they will fall in love with your pup!
Yeah, I am happy the girls will have Henry to grow up with. Even though it has been tough, they just adore him so much and honestly, they are doing really good with him. My two year old will be three at the end of May, and hopefully three will be a little easier then two. HA! Yea right. :) I think she is Henry's favorite of the bunch...wonder why? A little tree that squeals. :)
I could have written your post word for word.. However my son is 3 Hope I didn't burst your bubble that it will get better at 3 :0)
When Ruby came home to us, my son was 2 1/2 and she was 8 weeks old. They have been best friends since day 1
Ruby is now 9 months old now and seems to be going through a crazy phase.. so it makes their playtime even wilder! My son alternates between loving her chasing him and telling her to go away. However he is really good at getting her a toy to distract her.. they have also been doing some retrieving in the house - it is very cute to watch
I love that they are growing up together!

It is cute to watch. I finally caught my daughter in her newest trick. She gets his attention and like jumps and then when she realized he sees her, she takes off running and leaps on the couch the whole time she is laughing and cracking up. She told me they were playing Tag. I have caught her at the end of it, but just figured he went after her. This time I caught the beginning of the game and she is, as I suspected, the instigator. She has come a long way though and is doing SO MUCH better with the Tree and after her third tree, Henry is like "whatever" and leaves her alone. She's pretty good with the toy thing too, giving him a toy. So, as fun as it is for her, she is getting better. It's nice to know I am not the only one who understands this right now. She will be three at the end of May, guess it won't magically just disappear. HA
I love your profile pic!!! Ruby is adorable and I am glad your son is having a blast with her. I just love how great Henry is with the girls and he really does love them. It's a sweet thing to watch.
You definitely aren't alone in this, that's for sure!
My son LOVES to run around and Ruby loves to chase him - they play "tag often".
Sometimes all Ruby has to do is look at him & he will start to laugh hysterically.. so wonderful to see/hear.
The other day he was holding the phone to her ear and killing himself laughing - I'm not sure who they were talking to? LOL
How old is Henry? - he is adorabe!
When Ruby was 10 weeks old the main problem we had with her was biting.. She did it often and boy did it hurt!!
She has gotten much better now thank goodness - those puppy teeth are SHARP!!
Now we are into the stealing toys phase and jumping phase.. but we will get through that too (I hope!)
Have fun with Henry!
Jo
Yeah, his teeth either just got much sharper or something. It has been hurting more, plus with him being more comfortable here now and getting bigger, he is playing a little harder then before.
I know I shouldn't say I am ready for the next phase, but I am not gonna miss this biting. Someone on another thread called him a land shark and that was perfect, Lil Land Shark Henry!
