Since having Brody home I've noticed he is scared of EVERYTHING!
A few things he's reacted to...
Plastic grocery bags. We were walking out to potty and our neighbors were coming home with groceries and they had a bunch of bags sitting in front of their door and he FREAKED out. He would not walk any further!
Any vehicle that is running, or not in the spot its supposed to be. We live in a complex and if there is a car in the handicap spot (which is right in front of the breezeway out to the potty spot) he will stop dead in his tracks.
Any and all pieces of furniture in the house excluding our bed and the couch. The tv stand, tables, cd/dvd towers, book case, etc...afraid of them all! If a toy rolls under one, or even too close to one he won't go get it. If its just far enough away he does this "stalking" type of walk...really slow and picks up the toy softly and RUNS away as fast as he can.
Ors is/was afraid of everything too.................especially the vacuum. We call her kitty, short for scaredy cat. She has gotten much better, so it is mostly a puppy thing. Everything is so new to them:)
izzy had an issue this morning with shadows...it really scared me. before tucker came along i would just leave izzy out the front door (we have a large fenced in yard.....oh yes i shoud tell you that it is also in the woods.) but now i have to go out to make sure tucker does his buisness and that he is safe....well this morning izzy flew out the door into the yard (and i had no choice but to follow because tucker was right behind her) growling and barking doing these 1/2 twists...all i could think of oh **** there is a bear, a skunk, a racoon...something that was going to chew my face off....ha ha so there i was in my jammies looking as if i have just been hit by truck and i am going to get attacked by something what a way to start a wednesday morn....sure it isn't monday? ...and izzy is totally freaking out... and not the protecting kind either running around in circles around my legs taking both tucker and i almost out. and in all honesty i really have no idea who was more scared! :} all of this fuss for me to realize that it was the breeze blowing hosta leaves that the dogs have plowed over yesterday and that the porch light was creating a large shadow!
so with this new darkness at 5:30 in the morning will bring new issues that i am sure my neighbors will love!
Our doods really aren't afraid of anything. I really attribute that to the puppy training we took Calli to and they showed us how to use food in training to alleviate fear.
For example, if they are afraid of a vacuum, have on hand treats that they can't resist (small pieces of hot dogs, jerky, etc), and have someone start the vacuum in another room. Start feeding them treats constantly as the other person brings the vacuum gradually closer. Continue to treat and praise. Increase the amount of exposure as they get more accustomed and relaxed. This works-- we did that with the vacuum, swiffer sweeper, hair dryer, etc. It also works for other things-- someone with a cane or wheelchair, someone with a beard, or what have you. Anything they seem uncomfortable with is a good time to do this.
The concept is that they start to relate these things with a positive experience (i.e. treats) and will no longer be afraid.
A baby gate fell on Rosco during the fear-imprint period when he was 9 weeks old. So since then if I'm walking around holding a baby gate (tho we rarely use that particular one I can hold) he backs away/leaves. Funny thing is he seemed to barely notice at 9 weeks...just went back and sniffed the thing. So who knows why he developed that fear!
He also used to be afraid of puddles...perhaps they seemed like big HOLES in the ground...?
And when I first started grooming him on a grooming table it took about 15 minutes to convince him he wouldn't die if he jumped off. Silly boy!
But other than that no fears really and most of the above have resolved. Once he was really good in obedience I made him sit-stay while I moved the gate near him, around him, etc. He broke his stay the first time but after that was great!
Thule isn't too fearful except about ear cleaning products (though they both hate that!)
If the fears don't subside, I would recommend starting obedience ASAP and working in things he's scared of around him (first from afar, gradually nearer) so he gets confident around them. He'll learn that EVERYTHING is wonderful if he is obedient and nothing can hurt him...that he has control over things because when you tell him to do things he's safe and everyone is happy!
Kachi is the most afraid of strange sounds. The sound of me pulling up the wood shades to clean the windows scares him so much that he runs into the back bathroom, and tries to hide behind the toilet (only he's too big to fit anymore!) I have to practically drag him out-no, not practically-I DO have to drag him out, and into the room reassuring him, and letting him smell around. And unfortunately, I forget that he is afraid of this, so I have traumatized him more than once by pulling them up too fast!
Rocket is fearless and Stella is the oppisite. today she would not come outside because the water was on. she hates the vacuum and rocket will throw his toys at it. it seems like any thing that makes alot of noise she runs from and he wants to be right where the action is
