Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I am so excited to welcome our new goldendoodle puppy into our home in a few short weeks. I have researched and researched and researched, trying to prep myself, and my family to become the best puppy owners ever.
I made the mistake of joining a doggy forum(not here), and posted a question there- and got SLAMMED for wanting a goldendoodle. Then I read tons of negative things online about them being a designer breed.
Makes me sad. I didn't buy my puppy because he is a "designer" breed. We got him because we truly feel that he would make a great addition to our family. I love the typical goldendoodle's temperament, posssible low shed, happy go lucky demeanor, and their cute look.
Do you just ignore people that say these things? Have you ever been approached in real life while out with your dog and confronted?

Oh my lol! How much training did you do with Sophie to help her become a therapy dog?
Dear Alli,
I'm so sorry about this. We have had "purebred" dogs all of our lives. We loved our Golden Retrievers so very much but seriously the shedding was just too much. We have always had at least two dogs at a time. When I read about Goldendoodles I swore that would be my next dog. Kona is 4 and Owen is 7 1/2 months. They are as different as night and day but share a sweetness and delight in life that is just why we have dogs. The only negative comments I have ever gotten were when I told an acquaintance that we were taking the puppy to obedience classes. She is a dog trainer and insisted that the doodles she has experienced have been "off the wall". I have not protested any of her negative comments but I did tell her that our puppy has turned out to be the star performer in obedience class. Our older doodle didn't even go to obedience classes because he intuits everything we want from him. They are both the smartest dogs we have owned. I know I am not going to change anyone's minds about doodles, but no one is going to change my mind either!
Enjoy your puppy! Can't wait to see the photos. I have loved all the help available on DK and the warm friendships we develop.
Thank you! Kona was super high on our name list- the kids over-ruled us :(
You know what I say, not that I have ever had anyone say it to me in person, but over the internet. Because this is America and I can get whatever kind of dog I want. Screw people and the horse they rode in on. Sorry I am sleep deprived but seriously, where do people get off making judgments?
I used to feel guilty and explain why I didn't rescue a dog from a shelter, (though I think rescuing is an awesome thing) It is not my obligation to pick up other people's slack and if I want to pay for a dog then I will. I will not hide what he is.
Also, Jack is the one thing in my life that I got to have that is mine, that I picked, and that I have control over so to speak. So the next time someone tells you something nasty about a sweet doodle. Tell them to go do their research about just exactly how great a doodle is !!!
Welcome to the forum, usually I am very docile btw.
I needed that. Seriously, I posted a random question about dog food- and as soon as they saw goldendoodle its like everyone swarmed and yelled at me for not adopting from the APL/rescue since I was getting a mutt... whoa, I didn't even have a second to defend myself, and my choices.
Jennifer- Loved your post!!!
I don't understand that perspective either b/c all purebreds are "designer" dogs in the sense that they were designed for a particular purpose (most of those purposes are not at all helpful to the modern dog owner - hunting, herding, etc.). Doodles are bred with the purpose of being wonderful dogs that are smart, fun, low/no-shedding and social. What's wrong with that?
On a side note, when we had our Dalmatian people always asked us horrible questions like "Oh I heard Dalmatians are mean, is yours mean?," "Is your dog deaf, I hear Dalmatians are deaf?," etc. It was as if their only conversation topic would be the negative things they had heard about Dalmatians! Luckily the reactions for kids ("fire dog!" "101 Dalmatians!") made up for the adults!
