We just got home from a day trip. Brinkley played really hard last night and again today in the middle of the day. I noticed he was licking his pad and when I looked at it, it was red and bloody. He ate the pad skin right off. It's the bulb looking pad behind the main pad. It's so raw... and the one on the other foot is beginning to do the same thing. We just cleaned it but I don't know what to do. I know we need to take him to the vet and I'm going to try to get him in asap tomorrow morning but what can i do tonight so it doesn't get worse.
I'm worried.

Tea bags? Wow! Never would have guessed. He had socks on last night as we all slept so we wouldn't sneak a lick while we were sleeping. I took them off for a bit while we were on the bed so they could air out and then I put two new clean socks on his feet (as soon as I took the socks off he tried to lick them again but he isn't trying to take the socks off.)
What about that second skin stuff? Is that good or bad to use on dogs?
Thanks everyone!
I wouldn't use second skin it stings like crazy. Hope his paws heal up soon.
If they were just sore/chapped, bag balm works good but is messy. I put socks on them 30-60 minutes after appling it then wipe the excess off when I remove the socks. It works great to sooth the pads in winter from all the snow, especially if they tend to get ice balls between the pads.
Heather, you shouldn't wrap them. The first time it happened to JD, the emergency vet bandaged them, and my own vet cut off the bandages said that was the worst thing they could have done. It's crucial that the air gets to them. I kept socks or booties on when he went outside, but indoors, try to keep them uncovered as much as possible.
Soaking in water with epsom salts was also advised.
Hey Guys,
Brinkley is doing much better. We tried to air them out but he just kept licking and chewing them so covering them with socks worked better. They have dried up and aren't bloody. It looks like they are starting to heal pretty fast. Thanks goodness! Still raw but the skin is already starting to grow over. Thanks for all the tips and concern.
