Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well Oliver , my great protector showed his true colors yesterday.  We were out on the driveway of our house, just practicing some sit and stays, when one of the neighbors granchildren, saw Oliver and came down the street on a scooter, not a motorized one, just a regular little scooter.  Oliver knows this child, and the child has 2 goldensdoodles of his own. I don't know what triggered it, it was too fast, for me to remember, but the next thing I knew, Oliver spied the scooter, yelped and made a beeline for the garage to go into the house.  The problem with that was that I was holding on to his leash.  I went flying to the ground, and Oliver was by the door whining to get in the house.  When I was able to get myself up, I see him come out of the garage, and go to the kid for belly rubs and petting....I guess he was scared of the scooter, but I ended up having to go to the orthopaedist the next morning, I thought I had a broken hand.  It is swolllen and black and blue, with the exception of 2 fingers.  I take aspirin everyday, so it made the under the skin bleeding even worse, which made the swelling worse.  so now I am in compression bandage for 3 days, and the Dr. said to keep the hand elevated, ice, and use those fingers, so that is why I am typing, slowly but typing.  Of course it had to be my right hand to make things worse!!...Just another doodle happening, but let me tell you we are going to do some serious training when I get out of this mess...he has never bolted like that before, or pulled like that, but I guess it is my fault too that we didn't work on that end of training. I hope I am not too late to start, he just turned two.  But a 72 lb dog doing that is not fun, that is for sure....

Cheryl, I am so sorry you got hurt, but glad your hand was not broken. Oliver must have been really scared to do that to you....silly doodle :) Hope you feel better soon!!
Laurie thanks, but I have to tell you, today when we brought balloons into the house, he wouldn't walk in the room where the balloons were...He was whining and sort of crying, and then sort of barking at them, what the doodle??? this is a new thing, lol, 72 lb chicken.
Poor Oliver...everything is starting to be scary :( First a scooter, then balloons....what next??
I hope your hand mends back to normal soon! That fall must have hurt like the devil!!!! It is hard to predict what these doods are going to decide is scary. I was at the store with Tara the other day and had a plastic bag with merchandise over my arm. I bent over to pet Tara and the bag slid down my arm  toward her and she completely spazed out!  Jumped back like there was a monster after her!!  Fortunately she is only a 20 pounder otherwise I might have ended up sprawled out on the floor of the store too as it was completely unexpected!
I know, it happened so quickly, I should have let go of the leash, but could of, should have would of, too late now...But boy my hand is just so ugly...thanks for you kind thoughts...
Oh the hazards of doodle ownership, especially with a 72 pound scaredy cat!
You have that soooo right Jodi, today it was a bouquet of balloons, he wouldn't walk in the room they were in, he stood by the door whining, and barking at them, but wouldn't go near them...
My Dr. thought it was broken too, but the x-rays said no, and he said the same thing, sprain is worse, and I take aspirin, so there was a lot of bleeding and swelling inder the skin, ugh, just so ugly and painful....I am in a compression bandage to get the swelling down, and elevaation & ice...ugh, thanks for the kind words...
Doodles can definitely be hazardous to your health!  I still remember walking around for two weeks with a black eye when Murph decided to catapult off the bed.  I can imagine how that must have hurt...thank goodness it wasn't broken.  You just never know what's going to "put these guys over the edge".  Feel better....
Thanks Jane I do rmember when Murph did that, it does hurt and is ugly and so many awful colors right now..today he was afraid of a bouquet of ballons.  Refused to come into the room where they were, stood by the door and barked and whined at them, and ran from them~~~~

Oh Cheryl I'm so sorry about your hand!  This is one of my fears about getting a Doodle.  I'm used to the 5-10 pound variety dog so I have visions of flying through the air with me on one end and my Doodle on the other end of the leash!  LOL, now THAT would be a vision of loveliness (NOT!).

Take care of that hand my dear.

Thanks, Connie for the kind words.  I can understand your fear, lol, but I have to say, he is our heartdog, and although I wanted to kill him when it happened, he is still my baby, and it is really my fault for not training him properly.  He has never pulled or bolted before, so we just thought he was not going to ever do it, stupid us...But this too shall pass, and he wil get trained.  He is socialized with people and things, thats why we can't figure why that happened.
