Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a question about silver/grey doodles.  I have read that they are born black and then they shed out to silver/grey.  Does anyone out there know at what age do they start changing colors??  I have heard that some colors take up to two years to come through and completely change...is that true??  Smudge is a jet black 11 month old F2 goldendoodle.  Suddenly in the past few months I have noticed ALOT of white hairs coming out in her coat, mostly on her shoulder blades and down her spine area....is she changing??  Just curious, I don't care either way what color she ends up, but it's kind of exciting to see what happens.

Thanx for any info anyone can offer ;)

You may want to look in the group, ' From Pup To Adult'.  It shows how the coat colors have changed over time.

My girl must have a 1,000 more white hairs in the last month, although I don't think she will ever be all silver.  Maybe more salt and pepper than she already is now.

Lucy and Sophie's profile show how the black dog change to silver gradually over time.

Kona changed color slowly. He changed color for a long time. Now I would describe his color as pewter (not that it is an official color but that's what he looks like to me). He was still getting more color changes at age 3. Sadly, we lost our photos of Kona when he was young. We only have one picture of him as an 8 wk old and the current pictures. I wish I could see the progression of Kona's coat changes.

Just looked at the Lucy/Sophie changes. Kona definitely did not start changing color that young.

Everyone should learn a lesson from your loss ...... keep lots of pictures on DK, then if your computer crashes, you still have pictures!
If your dog is getting WHITE hairs and not just lighter hairs (silver) then most likely she will have some salt & pepper coloring rather that grey or silver.  Silver/grey doodles actually have hair that color rather than a mix of white and black.

My KoKo had her first haircut a few months back and although I knew she would look different I was somewhat surprised just how much.  I added a link to a previous post showing her before and after pictures.  She has also gone from a straight to curling coat.  It's fun to see just how much they change.

Thank u all for the info :)

Do any doods stay jet black all over???

My sister has a goldendoodle who used to be black.  He was born jet black and I would have considered him black prior to last week.  She gave him his summer shave down (he gets terribly hot once the weather warms) and suddenly he's not black anymore - he's a solid silver!  Charlie is 4 years old and has been silvering out for a couple years but it's pretty dramatic now.

I guess the haircut was a bit of a color surprise!
That is what happened to Baxter. At 6 months he was terribly matted and we had to shave him.  I would not have recognized the dog if they did not tell me it was Baxter.  He was black with some silver mixed in before the shave and after he was silver and has stayed that way.  He has some darker gray spots now but mostly silver.  I will have to put some photos up but I am at work and do not have any here.
Hi Brandi I have a black Labradoodle and about the time she started to develop har adult coat I noticed a few spots of white coming through she is now almost 3 and still has only patches of white through her so I guess she will eventually be all over grey to white
