Oliver's Non- spherocytic Hemolytic Anemica

Anyone have any experience with this disease?  Oliver was diagnosed on January 2nd = put on numerous meds and his red blood count was .5 away from normal but since the beginning of April it has been going down instead of up.  I am taking him to the clinic at Michigan State University for a bone marrow aspiration - none of the various blood test that have been run show why this is happening.  They have ruled out anything parasitic.  He is only 10 months old and just by looking at him you would never know that he is sick.  He tires easily but does play and likes to take walks (just not too long) and is so good with my 4 year old niece and 1 1/2 yr old granddaughter.  He doesn't act like the puppy he still is.

Would love to hear from anyone who has anything to tell me about this disease......

I am truly sorry that you both are going through this. I wish I had some advice on this for you but I can send you pawsitive thoughts from NJ!

What does your breeder say? I did read that this is genetic. I could not find out if there is any testing that can be done to know who is a carrier.

My breeder can find no genetic link.  And I trust her completely - she is a family friend.  She has been involved in all his vet visits and will be going with me to MSU.  I took Oliver as a "guardian" - she was going to use him for breeding.  Now there won't be any beautiful Oliver puppies!

Most likely immune mediated.  Almost assuredly familial as it has been seen in some Poodle lines.  Dam and sire don't need to be affected to produce it.  Conventional wisdom says that the breeding pair should not be bred again.  Sorry to say that, long term prognosis is not good when seen this young.

Parents are no longer with the breeder but she has made sure the new owners are aware of what happened to one of their pups.  I know the prognosis is not good ---- just devastated!

There are both hereditary and non hereditary causes. Have you ruled out lead poisoning? Chew toys made in China? Have you tried steroids? Epo? Is the spleen enlarged? Will your vet do blood transfusions to give symptomatic relief?

Sorry you and your pup ate going through a tough time. Good luck working through it.

Just about everything has been ruled out..........he's been on steroids for 4 months , Imuran, and several others - still on Prednesone and Imuran.   The bone marrow aspiration should give us some answers ---- hopefully.  Spleen is okay ---- we've talked about blood transfusions but they're not needed right now.   Thanks....
