(Sorry, gross text ahead:) Our 5mo puppy stands right next to the 2yo dog waiting for him to poop so he can eat it. Poor Boomer (2yo) rarely has a 'private' moment in the yard because Milo (5 months) is right there. I'm always out there too and try to get there first but the puppy is quick. Today, I kept the puppy on a leash while Boomer pooped and then I let the puppy off leash while I cleaned up the mess. In the moment of bending over to clean up, Boomer had gone to another spot to go some more and Milo ran over there and ate some before I could get to it. How can I stop this and I REALLY HOPE ITS a puppy thing! He does not look at or sniff his own. 95% of the time I clean up immediately but I have missed a few spots on occasion and the puppy has no interest in any poop that is not fresh (and warm).
I've read about putting pineapple juice on the food but doesn't that change the taste? My picky 2yo doodle will probably walk away from any food that smells like pineapple. I've also read about some meds/pills to give Boomer to change the smell/taste of his poop. It just seems "so wrong" to give him a pill to stop the habit of his puppy-brother.
Any advice? (other than to be right there when Boomer is pooping...which I try to be but like today, I can be cleaning up one pile when he starts another pile and puppy gets there before me). We have started to take them out separate but eventually, they both want to go outside and play together. AND some times there are time constraints and I need to let both out at the same time.
Thanks for your input,
Julie

Hi Julie, I too am having this problem. My doodle Smudge is 11 months old and she does the same thing. But then she comes in the house and pukes it up. I have heard the pineapple thing, but I was told to put crushed pineapple on their food, or I have heard you can use stewed tomatoes too. It makes their poo to acidy and it's not as tasty. I also read somewhere to use a spray bottle with vinegar water in it and spray them when they go for it, or, sprinkle some hot peppers on the poo and let them eat it. It'll burn their mouth and they supposedly won't do it again. I can't do that tho, that's mean. lol I haven't tried either approach with the pineapple or tomatoes just yet tho. I just clean the yard several times a day to keep her from eating it. I will try both tho if I can't break it myself.
Good luck with ur poop eater, I hope I can get my poopy puppy to quit....
