Cicadas!!!

Here in Middle Tennessee, the cicadas are back.  Every 13 years they come with a vengence; I mean, they are EVERYWHERE and it has just started.  Cicada skins are all over the grass, ivy, tree trunks, leaves, you name it - they are on it.  What does this have to do with doodles, you ask?  Well, I was outside and I noticed that Webster & Charlotte and their fellow doodle buddy, Charlie, were eating cicada skins.  Sucking them off the tree trunk like an anteater. 

Uncertain about the dietary implications of cicada eating, I immediately consulted the internet.  According to the cicada website, they are not toxic unless they have been treated with a pesticide.  The website does say "Big stupid dogs love them".  I am not going to promote the eating of cicadas, but I am relieved to know that they are relatively harmless.  Now, if I can keep my big stupid dogs from eating them....

I'm adding these to my list of creatures that have popped up on DK that aren't in Ireland.  So far Alligators, Bears, Snakes and now Cicadas!!!

Count yourself lucky Nicky!  I know God made creature big and small but seems like the good ole' USA got the lion's share of them.  YUCK to all that you mentioned, ESPECIALLY snakes!!!!!!!

We have Cicadas nearly every year and the racket, they are so loud. Haven't seen Jasper eat any of the skins but he does go after Crickets and lizards, I don't think he has caught any lizards yet but he has got a cricket , buried it for a while then brought it inside, I would love to take him further out bush but I would hate to have him chase some of our snakes Their tales would look like a lizard to him or even some of our spiders like the Funnelweb but maybe I'm putting my phobia about snakes and spiders on to him but we do have some of the deadliest here in OZ

LOL- I like them! I can't stand snakes, but i think certain bugs, including cicadas, are kind of cute!

Most years I would agree with you but this year is the "BIG ONE" and is predicted to be centered in our area.  Ever hear of "too much of a good thing" :-)

June bugs are very annoying. They must be the dumbest, clumsiest bugs on earth.

Halas keeps trying to check out the june bugs, but when he gets really close, he backs up, shakes his head, and sneezes.  Thank goodness.  I'm sure they'd get caught in his hair.
