Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know a few people have posted about their doodles getting spayed here recently, so I won't ask for any advice...thanks to DK, I loaded up on advice and tips from the other posts.

However, I do want to ask...did anyone notice a difference in their doodle once they were altered? I didn't give that much thought, until I was telling a friend at work about it and he said it could change her personality.

I felt sooo bad last night, Molly drinks a LOT of water, and she always wants a drink before we crate her for the night. Last night, I couldn't give her any water due to vets rules for being spayed today. She started making a little dry cough noise and it broke my heart. I wanted to just give her a little bit, just to wet her tongue but DH said "NO"...
then this morning, she was really acting thirsty, even running to the toilet and sniffing the lid.
It broke my heart. DH said she kept acting like she had dry mouth on the ride to the vet clinic....
did anyone elses doodle have a hard time not drinking before the surgery?

I'm so ready to get her home today. I took up all of her balls and frisbee this morning after she left, so she wouldn't be tempted to run around. I sat in the floor with her last night and just held her (as best I could, she was wanting to play) because I was sad for her, lol, am I crazy!!??
I wish I wasn't so nervous, but we actually had a friend who lost their husky when they went to get her spayed, it just never woke up from surgery...and now I keep thinking about that :-(

Okay..sorry to ramble. Just needed a place to calm my nerves.

Lindsey, Don't worry - your little girl will be fine :-)  It didn't change our Allie's personality at all.  She isn't going to want to run around for a couple of days.

Thinking about you and Molly today :-)

I understand just how you're feeling, but she'll do just fine.  In a few days she'll be back to normal, and this will be behind you.  Keep us posted on how she's doing...and try not to worry (I know easy to say).
It's nerve wracking but she'll be fine.  There isn't any personality change.  She'll probably want to play and run around within a day or two.  When Boca was done with her spay she was just as hyper and ready to run and jump as always.  There was NO indication anything was done to her by her mood =)  But no...no personality change.  I think that's a myth that goes along with "if you breed her just once, she'll calm down"

Lindsey-she will do great!!!

I know you are nervous and I know how you feel, I took a day off work the next day because she wouldn't go in her crate with her cone on. I also slept on the floor wth her because she couldn't jump on the bed. No changes in her once her recovery time was over with! Just make sure she rests the next couple days and she will be back to herself!! Sending you and Molly all good wishes!!! Let us know how she does!!!

Thanks guys!
I knew DK could help calm my nerves :-)

I'll post as soon as shes back from her surgery!! I hope they let her have some water when it's over, I know she'll be extra thirsty by then.
WooHoo!!
The vet called, DH said Molly was out of surgery and doing fine. He is going to pick her up now :-)
Yayyy!! Now if we can just make it through the healing process with no troubles.
I told him to give her water and food asap, I hated knowing ow thirsty she was.

They also microchipped her :-)
That's great news, best of luck now with the recovery period which I'm hopeful will be just fine.  i wouldn't give her too much food as she may throw it up.  It takes a while after an operation to get back to normal.
Hey how is Molly?  Montie was spayed yesterday still a little groggy but the twinkle is in her eyes.  Montie is a mad 7 month old and doesn't know what calm is, but nature and GA leftovers are keeping her 'chilled' ..although she is still attempting to roll over for a tummy tickle when we go near... She didn't go for a wee until she had been at home for 15 hours, which was starting to worry me, but when she went she had a massive wee...she is fine and sends best wishes to Molly
Thanks for the well wishes for Molly.
DH was at the vets just a few minutes ago when I called him, he's suppose to email me as soon as he gets her home.

He reminded me about not letting her drink or eat much...I had forgotten, it was in her post surgery information packet. Thanks for that reminder from you guys here too!!
I picked her up two bully sticks and some zuke's treats to stuff in her kongs when I get home...hopefully she'll be happy just laying around and chewing on her toys/treats for a while.

I'll keep you updated on her recovery :-)
Her tummy might be upset from the anesthesia, so I'd be really careful with any treats tonight.  I'm glad things went well...hopefully your girl is home now with "Nurse Mom".

interesting about the water as our vet said she could have water the night before, just no food.

I also see someone mentioned that it took 15 hours afterwards for their dog to go pee.  Shadow also wasn't going as regular as she had been but luckily I have a smart wife who noted that she really likes to sniff before she pees and couldn't sniff the ground with her cone on.  We took the cone off and she went out, sniffed the ground, and peed instantly.

LIndsey, So sorry you are stressed. I think Molly will be fine and I don't believe that spaying a dog alters their personality. I hate the no food/no water for the dogs, heck, I hate it for myself, when I have surgery :) She will be home soon and then you will be saying, "She just had surgery, how do I keep her calm?" Just think how happy you will be to see your Molly girl and we are wishing her a speedy recovery. Good luck!
