This breeder sold me a sick puppy.

Let me tell you the whole story.  I am so mad - I might be mispelling things.

So - We traveled 3 hours to pick up this puppy.

When we got there - she had all the puppies out in a little playpen - if front of her house.

Now - I made sure (as much as one is able) to read as much as I can from here and other websites about all the breeders b/c I didn;t want - what exactly happened to me.

I thought that I did my homework pretty well.  I didn't pick the breeders that had puppies for Way cheaper - b/c I didn't hear anything good/or bad about them.  I went with a slightly more expensive price -  but a breeder that people here wrote good things about.  I went to their groups and read as much as I can etc..

So - here I am thinking that - I really did my part in ensuring that I get a healthy pup.

(of course there is no guarantee - but I felt that I did my part)

So - while I am looking at the pups. a couple of the pups in the playpen poops.  they had very stinky diarrhea.  I sort of looked at the breeder and she told me that she just gave the pups some worm medicine and that causes that.   So - here i am - I don't know - what caused puppies to have diarrhea.

so before I left - she gave me a little packet with white pills in it.  she said that her vet tells her to give it to the buyers - so that when the pups have diarrhea from the stress of going to a new home - I can give it to him.  uhhh.  a little confusion - b/c no one here said anything about this.  but again - I didn;t know.

I picked out a pup and he did very well in the car.

So - we got home he didn't go to the bathroom for another couple of hours.  So finally he poops - its definetly very soft.  didn't think much of it = b/c she told me about the medicine.  so then during the night he has diarrhea in his crate.  then again - in the bath yard.   then he has another one in the house - but this time there is a little blood in it.

So - now I'm freaking out.  I checked out the little packet and it says - it is metronidazole.  so i looked it up and -= it said its for clearing up infections and parasites.

I emailed the seller - she didn't get back to me for a whole day.  She says - that blood in the stool means giardia and that we need to give her the pills and have the vet do a fecal test.

I did start him in the medicine - and he actually didn't have any blood stool after that.  and he seems a little more energetic.  but still he seems a little lethargic.  and hasn't been going to the bathroom regularily

I don't know - what I am feeling right now.   I am so mad that - I traveled hours, paid hundreds of dollars for a sick puppy.  But I think also - I am so mad - is that she obviously knew that the pups were sick - but she didn't tell me and was passing it off as stress.

can someone - help me with this.  I am so upset.

I think I'm in some weird shock.

We just recently had this same experience.

We brought home a new puppy, from what I thought was a reputable breeder. Our puppy had an extreme case of coccidian. The breeder was not upfront about it. We drove four hours to KY and then upon taking her to the VET realized that it was not good for our younger grandchildren under 3 to be around her. I was so upset.

we paid 2,000 for this pup. I loved her from the moment I saw her and went through 2 weeks of doing all of her basic training. Why, oh why, are breeders not honest. This was our 4th dog and we never had this issue before.

We finally drove her back 4 hours and the owner will probably resell her to someone else. Our Vet said the breeder had to know she was sick when we picked her up. Know how you feel. Is such an awful experience. Our grandkids are babies and there is no way, we would risk them getting it from her.

Marianne, this discussion is more than 5 years old.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with this "breeder".

Oh I did not notice. Are there any newer discussions about this topic anywhere?

Well, there are lots of discussions about puppies with intestinal parasites, and some about bad breeders, lol. You can do a search using the  "Search Doodle Kisses" box in the upper right hand corner.

I just have to say here, do you all think it is usual for puppies to come home with worms or infections?  Have I just been lucky?  Webber had absolutely none of those problems due to the worming and care taken of him by his breeders.  Seda had no worms, but she has some of those long ears that stay moist, and her ears were infected.  That problem has not reoccurred with rinsing and short hair under the ear leather.  I think the responsible breeders can give you the vet record on your pup that includes the dates the pup was wormed and the shots it has had.  The only dog I have had that came with a problem was from a "breeder" than ended up being run out of business for animal cruelty.  I didn't know about puppy mills at the time.  Anna, YES, she should pay that Vet bill for the sickness part.  I think the wellness exam, which can be from 35-50 dollars, is probably your responsibility.

It does seem to be common among doodles; but maybe that's just because we hear about the dogs with problems.

However, it certainly shouldn't be usual, or commonplace, or tolerated, IMO, especially when the puppies are not coming from puppy mills, the owners have paid a small fortune for them, and the breeders brag about how healthy and well-cared for their dogs are.

I don't think it should be usual.  Ned's infections were caused by fox tails, not illnesses or parasites.  His shouldn't have happened, but the breeder had recently moved.  I haven't ever had another dog come to me or any family member ill - either from the shelter, backyard breeder, reputable breeder etc.

thanks for all your replies.  I really don't know - what I would have done without you guys.  It was so nice to log in see comments.

I think you guys got it right on - I understand pups get sick - but I was just not prepared at all for this - at this time.  I was just thinking butterflies and rainbows and me and my pup cuddling.  I was prepared for the pee/poo and crying.  But not bloody diarrhea.

I think that I was so worried - i really didn't have those butterfly/rainbow moments of the first few days with a new pup.

So I did take him to the vet.  he did run the intestinal parasite screen and the fecal cytology and he said that was fine. And he said that the giardia test is a bit more extensive - and he didn't want to do it - b/c I already started him on the metronodazole and the pup's poo was really good and and his energy level improved - so that pup most likely did have giardia - and the medicine was working well.  Which made sense.

So - remember I told you about that really bad doggie smell he had.  the vet noticed the smell right away.  and he said he thinks that either the pup or maybe someone in the litter got sprayed by a skunk.  So he gave me this shampoo - to help with it.   But this guy in the waiting room - told me about - baking soda and dawn and someone else said hydrogen peroxide.  Does anyone know - how to get out skunk smell?

So = its been only three days - and I'm already dealing with bloody stool and skunk smell.

thank goodness the kids think the pup is marvelous and have bonded just great.

So - I did email the breeder and said that - I understand giardia happens - but that she should have told me when I came to pick him up.  and that I think that she should pay for the parasite screen and the fecal test.  I'll let you guys know what she says.  I hope she does the right thing.

I'm gonna add a new discussion and introduce my little baby.

UGH - I'm mentally and physically exhausted

Feminine hygiene was will get rid of the smell.  My teaching assistant's poodles were always running after skunks and she swears by it.
Oh no! That's no fun at all :-(
My Molly girl came home healthy and happy. Then she started getting bad diarrhea...but I'm fairly certain it's because I switched her dog foods. I can only imagine how exhausting this is for you!
I totally understand you not wanting to act frustrated around DH too, I would be the same way. DH would be pissed at me if I talked him into getting a $$ dog and THEN it also ended up being sick :-(
HOWEVER, I'm sure things will get better and you'll look back years from now and laugh at all of the struggles you had (maybe, lol).
...and how crazy that the pup ALSO got sprayed by a skunk!!! Where in the world did your breeder keep her puppies? In the house or outside??
this is really upsetting. I'm so sorry you had to start off your new life with puppy like this. I'm glad you contacted the breeder. If she doesn't cover the expenses, I MYSELF will be pissed. I can't believe she didn't let you know before-hand. Lola came to us with 2 really really bad ear infections....so that was pretty upsetting too. Keep us updated on this! At least you got a head-start on "what to do if your pup is sick"
OK. The breeder got back to me. She agreed to pay for the medicine and the 2 fecal tests. She tried to explain to me that she gave us the meds bc stress will cause dorment parasites to cause damage. Does this make sense? Well I am really happy that she took responsibilty for this. I was going to warn people about the breeder but at least she is responding in a responsible manner. So now I can finally stop worrying about this. Thanks everyone for all ur comments and encouraging word. If I have u guys I don't need to pay for a therapist
