Even though physically, Jack is a perfect combination of his two parent breeds, he has some traits/behaviors that are very clearly one or the other. For example, he is absolutely addicted to retrieving...all he wants to do is catch/chase a ball (or other object) and bring it back to me. He wants to do this 24/7. You cannot sit down anywhere in Jack's presence without having a ball dropped in your lap. I cannot interest him in any other game.
On the other hand, he must get his eating habits from his poodle side, as he is an extremely picky eater. He rarely finishes a meal, and often turns his nose up at treats that he seemed to enjoy the last time it was offered...as if he just isn't in the mood for that particular flavor today. I know labs are famous for eating just about anything, so it must be the poodle side, although I will say my pure-bred poodle was much less fussy than Jack.
How about you? Any behaviors or habits in your F1 that you can clearly identify as being either poodle or retriever?
Well I'm right there with you on the fetching! When I come home, Nala usually tries to "happy attack" me and when I ignore her, because jumping on me is a no-no, she will immediately run and grab the nearest rope or ball for me to throw... She just can't contain herself! Also, she can go quite a long time when swimming and fetching. If you saw my Chicago Flood video, you'll see where she was swimming the other day. We were out there for an hour fetching in the water and she was still raring to go! I had to take her in!
But when it comes to food, she still has the lab majority on that one. She will eat and try to eat anything! I can't think of one thing she won't eat....
I've never had a poodle and haven't been around them long enough to know the breed, but I would say that Nala is just a long-haired lab!
But she's one doodle that I love with all my heart! She's my first child! ; )
I see Rosco as totally labby in personality: Worships food, is a lounging lazy love, and loves to retrieve in the water. I think his fur is his only poodley attribute!
Thule is probably right in the middle of the two breeds:
--started off a picky eater but now gets almost as excited as Rosco does at meal time
--more curious, sensitive (yet still very confident), busy, and bouncy in what I guess is a poodle way?
--As long as it's not too hot she could fetch for HOURS and also loves to swim
Sadie's mother was a taller, lean black Lab and her father a Standard Apricot Poodle. I think she has more of the poodle build, but her mother was lean not stocky so hard to tell yet. She's not quite 4 mos old but her legs are getting long and she is very light on her feet like the poodles, unless she has something she's not supposed to have. Then she runs through the house and sounds like a little horse.. lol
She definately has Lab qualities. She has started digging holes and she constantly has something in her mouth. My yard is fenced and has lilac and honeysuckle bushes surrounding the yard. Luckily she is digging in the bushes and an old garden area, not the lawn. I stop her when I catch her at it but I can see small holes started in various places. I think she has found every old stick and stone in the bushes. I would take them from her and had quite a pile lol. Hopefully she hasn't swallowed too many of them.
She's a good eater. I give her her full days ration of food in the morning and she only eats about a quarter of it, then a little more in the afternoon and finishes it at night, she doesn't gobble it so I let it sit and let her eat at her own pace. She hasn't turned down a treat yet.. lol.. but does sniff it a few seconds before taking it.
She does love to play fetch and tug. I have a small wading pool and put water in it shortly after I got her and it was really hot. She got right in and splashed around and jumped in and out. I'm sure she will like the lake when we have a chance to go after she is a little bigger. I'm sure she will have a shaggy, hair coat. When she is wet from the pool or rain I just towel her off and she is dry in 10-15 mins and no wet dog smell, which is great.
She is just a great little girl and I love her, I'm so happy we found each other.
Max is a clone of his father in personality, walk, jumping, play, training and more.....max's dad is a std poodle. HIS coat is scruffy F1 but he's got the lab build around his neck/chest.
Peanut who is a f1 GD is an exact clone of her golden retriever mom except Peanut has fleece coat, doesn't shed. BUT her personality is so much like a golden, always carries some toy in her mouth, loves to play fetch, loves everybody
BUT Max at 1.5yrs old let his lab side out and can swallow things whole
Peanut at 1.5yrs old decided to be lighter on her feet, and actually can jump over 3ft hahhhaaaaa she's built thick so we call her TANK-a-Doodle.
her poodle thinking ways aides her in being able to unzip pockets and my son's backpack for school.
We have two F1 GoldenDoodles. Our big boy, Paolo, (you can see his photos on my page) looks like they picked individual parts from his parents: Retriever head, ears, body shape, gigantic paws, tail and Poodle mouth, legs, and gait. Our mini Doodle, Dolce, looks like a blend of her parents.
My Yankee who is also half lab half poodle sounds exactly like your Jack and looks similar to yours. Sometimes he is picky like a poodle when he eats and sometimes he wolfs it down like a lab. He also is obsessed with retrieving. He is also obssessed with being in our swimming pool no matter what time of year and temperature. The minute he feels overheated he is wading in the pool, whether it is July or January makes no difference! He doesn't understand why I won't let him inside when he is dripping wet! You gotta love him!
Definitely! Louie is much more lab than poodle. He has to have something in his mouth all the time, especially when he is excited. And I hope this is not too insulting, but poodles are known for their intelligence, labs, not so much. Labs more for their friendly and warm personality. Louie definitely does not have the poodle brain! We call him our dumb blonde (again, sorry if that insults anyone!) because he is really not that bright! I had a poodle growing up and Louie has similar eating traits that my poodle had, my poodle only ate when we ate, and when we came home would run to her food bowl. Louie does the same, when we come home he runs to his food bowl, and he eats breakfast when we do, lunch when we do, and dinner when we do, although we keep his food down all day long!
I'm not insulted, I'm cracking up here! My last dog was a poodle, and she was much much smarter than Jack! My daughter has a "down south" expression she says to him:
The ugly stick missed you,
But the dumb stick got you twice!
LOL!
Oh, yeah. I can totally see Mazie's parents' traits in her. The problem is, her inner Poodle just gave up and stopped talking to her ages ago. She's pretty much a black, curly-haired Golden Retriever. Now I would NEVER say anything mean about my Mazie - she is my love - but having had scary-smart Standard Poodles all my life (and my parents had them, and my grandparents had them), I was expecting a bit more...how to say...SMARTS. Mazie is a big goofball! My Poodles could identify their toys by name and would bring, say, the hedgehog or the parrot when asked. They could figure out how to open doors, drawers, bags with snaps and zippers. Mazie, not so much. In fact, not at all. So I guess I should be grateful, because apparently with her, um, diminished intellect, she is far less work. I can leave food on the counter, a muffin in my purse, boxes or bags on or near the floor and mail just lying out without a fear that if I turn my back she'll turn the newspaper into origami cranes. On the other hand, she does love to grab stuff off the coffee table every now and then, just to show me that she can. And the paws - good grief! Her paws are soooo giant and webbed and fluffy, you'd think she was a teddy bear. We actually call her the aardvark-bear-cat-dog (ABCD for short) because she loves to eat ants, her paws are totally bearlike, and she jumps vertically and backwards like a cat. Not much Poodle, though. Nope.
