This will be my 1st time to cook for Ayla. :)
She & Storm have been on Orijen for the past 4 months & been doing great. Ayla has had diarrhea the past 2 days, i'm thinking it's due to the mud at the dog park, that she may have eaten. I have searched on the forums here about cooking chicken & rice, for a bland diet to help her. I know i should get white meat, like the breast. But is it ok to buy frozen chicken breast? Should i only buy fresh raw chicken? I want to boil it & chop it up & mix it with white rice.
I've never seen Ayla NOT eat her food. She usually will eat up all her food in a minute! This morning she just had alot of water and she ate very little of her kibble. She just sat there and stared at me & then i gave her a little pepto. She is resting now. I am hoping the chicken & rice will help, if it's nothing serious.

poor baby :(
Maple went through this 2 weeks ago and we think it was from eating sticks. I poach a raw chicken breast in a little water and make brown rice in the rice cooker. Chop up the chicken when room temp and stir into the rice. The key is give small amounts at first until she regains her appetite. I start with 1/2 - 3/4 cup of the mix and increase as is tolerated. Also, it's ok to give the rest to her cold.
My rule of thumb is give an ailment (not injury) 3 days for nature and the bland diet to work.
Thank you for responding so soon! Ayla like to take a chunk of mulch into her mouth when we're outside on our lawn. Must be that. Projectile diarrhea on ones front lawn is no fun. :(
Thank you for replying with your chicken /rice instructions. Me & DH are off to the grocery.
Also, buy some canned pumpkin (if you can find it). A spoon of that with each meal for a couple of days will give her the fiber to solidify the stools. Be careful not to get pumpkin pie mix though!
In a pinch on vacation when no pumpkin was available, I used organic baby food squash. Worked, just a little slower.
I personally would bring a fecal sample to the vet before doing anything else. If she was eating mud at the park, there's a very good chance she picked up a parasite, giardia is rampant in many parts of the country right now. If she has giardia, no food is going to get rid of it, and meanwhile, you are taking the chance of her reinfecting herself and giving it to your other dog. If you aren't picking up after her or cleaning her properly, you can get it yourself. If the diarrhea is simply caused by things like eating mulch and mud, you are going to have to stop her from doing that, even if means she simply cannot be outdoors unsupervised or offleash. Otherwise, it's just going to keep happening. Projectile diarrhea can lead to dehydration and even anal gland issues if you allow it to go on repeatedly. The fact that the diarrhea is causing a lack of appetitie tells me there is something else going on here than just a digestive upset.
As far as cooking for her goes, I would absolutely not use brown rice, it may be healthier for humans, but it contains way too much fiber and is much harder to digest than white rice when used as a remedy for diarrhea. The sticky, starchiness of plain old white rice is what helps bind and improve diarrhea.
I would use white meat chicken, well drained and cut into the tiniest pieces you can manage. Ground chicken would be best. You can also use very lean ground beef or turkey. Mix one part meat to two parts white rice, and give her small amounts, maybe a half cup at a time, several times a day.
Canned pumpkin is a good idea, too.
But again, I do urge you to have a fecal done, just to be on the safe side.
sound advice. thanks for the info on brown rice Karen!
