There have been some incidents when dogs have been injured or traumatized when their dog tags have gotten caught on objects. I came across this site, check out the collars they could be a good solution. I have not ordered from them so I don't know much about them, but the idea is a good one.

Tagless collars or boomerang tags are great but I still like the dangling tag. Prior to about a year ago, I wouldn't have known to check a loose dog's collar for a tag, but I immediately could see if they had standard tags. We live in a semi-rural area and I worry that, if my dogs get loose, my neighbors or passer-bys won't see the boomerang tags through my dogs thick hair. There have been times that I have seen a wandering dog and picked them up if they had visible tags. (Easily identified the dog as a pet away from his home.) For this reason, I will keep dangling tags.
On my boomerang tag, I have "MICROCHIPPED" engraved. This way I feel like I have the visibility of dangling tags, the security of a boomerang tag, and notification of the microchip.
I just bought Indy two of these and I'm pretty excited. It's nice not to have so much jingling when we are running!
They also have cute patterned ones
