If you feed from the variety of flavors in the 4 star line, I'm curious as to which size bag you purchase of each flavor. 5, 15, 30 pound bag of one then switch?

I'm ready to buy one of those plastic dog food storage containers and I have two sizes from which to choose. One would be better if in the future I was buying the 15 pound bags, the other for the 30+.

A lot depends on the size of your dog and how fast he or she goes through the food. You don't want to have more than a month's supply of food at a time, unless it's frozen.
Ok that is good to know about no more than a month's worth. I'll pull out the calculator for that one. So are you saying you would switch flavors about once a month then?

No, there are really no hard and fast rules about how often to switch flavors. I believe you are expecting a puppy, so for you, I wouldn't be planning on switching anything for quite some time. The first couple of weeks after your pup comes home, you should keep him on the same food he was getting at the breedr's even if it's not a very good quality. Assuming the breeder is not feeding Fromm, after the first few weeks you want to start with one formula and stick with it for awhile, until you are sure the puppy is free of all parasites and has firm stools. I would not start switching flavors for at least three months after he/she comes home.

After that it depends on his eating habits, and your budget. For most people, it is more economical to buy larger size bags of food, as it costs less per lb. So most people switch flavors with each new bag. If you buy one bag per month, you'd be switching once a month. If you buy two bags per month, you'd be switching every two weeks. There is no rule about this.

If money is no object, you can keep several different flavors on hand and alternate them at every meal. But it can be expensive to do that.

Thanks Karen. I am aware of all the early puppy food issues. I've got all that down. I'm buying the plastic food container and was wondering if it made more sense to buy the one that holds the 15 pound bags or the 30 pound bags if I eventually plan on varying the flavors. I'll be on Puppy Gold until then. If I will only be going through the 15 pound bags I don't want to all the time be reaching down into a half to a quarter filled plastic food container. Just sounds like a pain to me.

Puppy is a standard GD by the way.

I buy the biggest bag but I have two adult dogs. I'd say we go through one a month. I think you should buy the bigger container even if you don't need it initially. I have a big rectangular storage bin but I still keep the food in the bag inside the container as I use it.

Also I keep the container on top of one crate to make it easier on me.

Oh the crate sounds like a good idea. That would help. It's going to be in the garage but a couple steps down on the floor.

I Switch flavors every time I finish a bag. I buy the 15 lb. bag. I also have a container that holds the 15 lb. bag. I love Fromm food and that they have a variety of flavors.
I buy a 15 pound bag, which lasts Peri about 6 weeks. I keep it in an air tight container and it stays very fresh.  For Peri, 6 weeks is the perfect time with one flavor.  Also important to think about, Fromm is only at 3 locations in my area and all are not easily accessible (it's not like I drive by them daily).  Sooo, I would rather go to the store once every 6 weeks vs. every 2-3 if I bought the 5#er.
