I have a question I hope someone here can answer.  I came home today was huging on Harley and noticed two marble size knots on either side of his penis near the base, not back near the scrotum though.  He was neutered last week and all is healing well there.  He did seem to be excited as in the penis was more erect.  I rushed him up to the vet and the ladies up front said that it was normal, that the knots hold the penis in place.  I have never seen this before on Harley and I've always have had females in the past.  Should I be concerned?

hmm.  i am wondering if you are seeing a full bladder!   I notice this on Cooper when his bladder is full!  LOL!  In fact, that is one way I know he has to go outside.   He always lays on his back to get his tummy rubbed and when I see a little bulging there, I take him outside!   It goes away when he pees.   I asked his Vet about it and he said "No Problem".

Bulbus Glandis: This swelling of the penis is located toward the rear end of the os penis. The bulbus glandis enlarges to a firm spherical shape, resulting in the so-called "coital tie." This tie prevents the male dogs from separating immediately after mating and may last from 5 to 60 minutes.  (edited to avoid being too graphic).

This is normal anatomy.  Nothing to be concerned about.

thank you.  I get what they are for now.  Do males do this periodically all their lives?

Yeppers, I think that's perfectly normal. With all the males I've had, neutered and non, a quick glance there is a way to check if someone needs to hit the shrubbery.

Funny thing is that I noticed the same thing with Webster a couple months ago and googled to see if it was normal.  Yup, all normal :-)

I have to laugh Kathy :)  With my first dog, about 10 years ago, I was scratching his belly while he was standing on his hind legs leaning on the balcony wall.  As I got lower on his belly I also felt those two knots, I almost took him to the vet too, but when I checked later, the knots had reduced to where I couln't feel them anymore and I was a little embarrassed at myself LOL  Never told anyone that story before!
