Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have gone through almost all the discussions but my computer kicked me out and I don't want to go through all of them again.  Maybe this is in there somewhere.

Cooper smells very bad and I think it is because he goes in the water.  He has a wooly coat I think.  I looked at pictures in one of the discussions.

I just ordered Keko Shampoo Ultra MD to try on him.  Has anyone used this before?  I have not given him many baths because he gets groomed all the time.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Could it be because his coat is not drying fully to the root? I think Joanne said something about that long long time ago about Spud ( Also has wooly coat)not dryig fully....

I sure did, Kyoko.  Good memory.

Does he by chance smell like MUSTY LAUNDRY.  You know that smell~ when you forgot to go back to the dryer and the laundry only partially dries.

My wooley poodley doodle will dry on the surface but deep down by the skin it can take days.  Is your climate humid now?   My doodle swims also, so in the summer I keep him short.

Using a vinegar rinse might help.

Does he smell like a dirty mop, because if he does Koyko is absolutely right and his coat is drying on the top but remaining damp underneath. Does he get wet alot, if so, you may need to use the blowdryer on him once he is mostly dry.
Yes, maybe that is a good way to put it a dirty mop.  He does get wet just about every morning with the dew in the yard and chasing around in it.  I have been trying to dry him better.  We do also get pretty humid in the summer.  I will have to try your suggestions and thanks for the help.

When I finally discovered what the problem was I decided to shave him down and the smell became much worse!  All that must was hiding in there.    Poodles can actually MOLD and even with good care I was not solving the problem.  Whew, he smelt like an old fat man in a bar who hadn't had a change of clothes in months.

I found I had to cut my boy short in the summer.  It was not worth bathing in special soaps, vinegar rinses, aching backs.... it just goes on.  He just wants to get wet and be a dog.

In the Winter though, I do not have the humidity problems or the swimming dog and his coat is much longer.

Good luck with what you decide and both of you have fun this summer   :)

Thanks Joanne.  I am having him groomed next week and will have him cut much shorter.  He hasn't been as bad lately because I am trying to dry him better and actually bought some shammy's for dogs to use to see if they absorb better.  I agree, he wants to be a dog and both my dogs are very active and love being "a dog".

 Thanks for you reply.
