Realistic for 9 Week puppy to go in doggy backpack on a bike ride?

Can I carry my  9 week old puppy in a special doggy backpack  while I riding my Mountain Bike for 3 hours? (Getting puppy in 2 weeks)  I can stop as often as I want to try and get him to pee and bring water for him.  My breeder thinks it's fine but I thought I'd ask folks living in the trenches, so to speak. TIA :)

I was looking at the outward hound backpack. WE haven't brought him home yet.  I"m hoping that he'll fit as he was already 8 pounds at 6 weeks What kind of bag did you use?  Also, your puppy is so cute!! How old is he now?

Thanks!  Marlow is about 15 weeks now and about 14 lbs.  I haven't tried to put him in the backpack again but I don't think he would fit anymore.  I used an Outward Hound backpack, I think it's called the pet-a-roo or something like that?  It's a forward-facing pack (think marsupial), with an attachment for his collar in case he fell out.  I took him when he was about 11-12 weeks old and about 10 lbs.  The concern wasn't the weight so much as height, so it just depends on how long your puppy's limbs are.  Also, I took him on my roadbike which makes me lean forward, so with a front pack the danger of falling out was higher.  I just took it slow, though, and stayed conscious of it.  You can probably do it, but I doubt you'll be able to ride as fast as you usually do!

Where are you riding?  I wouldn't take a puppy in my backpack because I tend to fall frequently, but in a safe, natural area, you might be okay.  I would suggest shorter rides at first to see how he likes it.  My labradoodle used to run after my husband on his mountain bike at about 3 months.  He loved biking and would heel behind the wheel on my bike.  He ran with us biking until he got sick and it was his favorite thing.  If biking is a part of your life, make it a part of your dog's life also.  It is something you can definitely enjoy doing together.  Speaking of that, there is a book you might enjoy, not about biking, but about including a dog in your life - all of it.  It is called Merle's Door  and I loved it.   Sad at the end, but very worthwhile in developing a human-dog relationship.
