Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Last night in the midst of having a few laughs on DK and with Quincy sitting next to me for his favorite rump scratch, I felt a lump and a pop and I suddenly had a handful of bloody drainage. A small cyst that I had been keeping an eye on was suddenly larger and chose that moment to break. YUK! I got up early this morning and made an appt with the vet, the earliest one they had was 6pm this evening. We just got back from the vet where Quincy has the cyst incised and drained of the remaining gunk. He was an absolute angel at the vet and the only anaesthetic required was a handful of liver treats. I cleaned the mess of blood off his fur and cleansed it with the hibitane solution the vet gave us, he is now on antibiotics as well. Quincy has also been doing a lot of scratching and had some very dry scaly skin under his chin. The vet gave us a medication to help with the itching from the cyst which the vet said will also work for the dry skin. The med is a prednisone and I am a little concerned because from what I can remember, prednisone suppresses the immune system and that is not what we need when we are taking antibiotics for a possible infection. Does anyone have any experience with this and should I give them to him now or wait till he finishes the antibiotics. I didn't really think of these things until I was driving home as I was a little stressed and more traumatized than Quincy was. The vet said to put a cone on him to keep him from licking but I'm hoping that my foray into my son's underwear drawer will work without having to resort to that.

Quincy is now resting on the floor with DH sitting beside him giving him some extra TLC and feeling sorry for him.

No swimming until the area is all healed, and Quincy was enjoying his duck retreiving so much. :<(

UPDATE: The boxers are working well except for the 2 am acrobatics around the bed trying to get them off. The area already looks a lot better this morning. Thank you everyone for the well wishes and he really does rock those boxers.

That`s why I had to go to my son`s drawer, he`s the boxer guy. : > )
Wow, Quincy was a real trooper. Love the underwear! Hope he is all clear soon.

Thanks Nicole, we still have to arrange that meeting, who knew it would be so difficult.

Gracie Doodle sends her love to Quincy.  It looks like he is in good hands and will be just fine.  She really went a little crazy when she saw Quincy in his boxers.  Gracie ran to her costume drawer and came out looking like this!!

Now she is trying to tell me that she needs to find a flight so she can come take care of Quincy!!!!!

Please do come, Quincy would love a little TLC from Nurse Gracie.

Gracie Doodle is so sweet and thoughtful :)

I'd do as the vet said. The antibiotic should take care of the infection despite the steroid, Then later on you can give Quincy Evening Primrose Oil for dry skin. I'd say 1000 mg for your big guy. Calla and Luca get it daily. She scratches much less now.
He has been on EPO for over a year and he still scratches. I kept thinking he had fleas although I could never find any signs of them.  He would probably be scratching a lot more if he wasn't. The vet suggested I get him groomed and get some of that fur off him, but frankly I can't see how that would make a difference. He also said it could be seasonal allergies, but he has been doing this since winter.
Aww, poor Quincy.  Feel better "boxer boy".
I am glad that Quincy is doing better.  He really looks cute in the boxers.
poor you!!! I'd probably hyperventilate if something like that happened with me and Lola. Glad it's looking better today...I don't really have any advice...we've had Lola on antibiotics and prednisone at the same time before and it all seemed to work out, but I can't speak for others!!! He looks pretty cute in boxers, Lola says "woof"!
Feel better Quincy! You look smashing in your boxers!! I'd show SophieBear your picture but she is still too young for such adult content lol!
