My puppy Phoenix seems to want to pick up everything he sees as we are walking.  I keep a close eye on our path but every once in a while he sees something before I can stop him.  Help!!!!!!!!

For both of your questions it would help if you told us about your puppy.  How old is he?  How long have you had him?  What are you doing SO far?

We had him since he was 9 wks old and he's 15wks old now.  We started him on puppy training a couple of weeks ago every thursday.  I tell him no when I see him about to put something in his mouth and if he gets something before I catch him I say out and may need to take it out manually.

He's very observant and gets excited when we are walking, we have alot of activity in our neighborhood with some children so he's always see different people and likes the attention.  Still learning, still training and still working with my puppy.

Well not to be a smart A$$ (  Because they do not have Pockets ) but they do it because of curiosity and to learn what things are . As a Pup Spud was always picking up pine cones and leaves to bring home , must be the retriever in them
I think the retriever in them the does kick-in. sometimes I give him stuff to carry on a walk-that keeps his mind and mouth busy.
Riley brings lumps of soil into the house!!! Lovely (not)  I have put him on a long line now in the garden so I can stop this. I also swap stuff he picks up in his mouth for a piece of kibble.  So far he has "given' me leaves, stones, twigs, coal, a bottle top and two shoes!!! (from different pairs lol )
Teddy used to do this. He had to pick up everything he saw! Paper, trash, leaves, pinecones, etc. Once I caught him chewing a piece of gum, and once I found a piece of soap in his mouth! I always said "LEAVE IT" if he picked up trash but I let him pick up leaves, sticks, etc. If he had something in his mouth he shouldn't I continued saying "LEAVE IT" and gave him a (gentle) collar tug until he dropped it. Eventually he stopped with the trash (maybe around 5 months?) and at that point I started saying "LEAVE IT" when he picked up pincones and such. Now (at 8 mo.) he rarely tries to pick up anything and if he does he'll drop it immediately when I say "LEAVE IT". So just be consistent and it will get better!
I have a 7 month old who would eat ANY&EVERYTHING if he could.  I chose to deal with this by "not dealing" so to speak.  I use a gentle leader head collar for controll on walks. when playing outside I keep a very tempting treat or toy which I use to distract him.  I do not give the foreign objects much attention and I don't say anything.   I've chosen to deal this way because he is not yet consistant enough with the leave-it & drop-it commands to be trusted and I don't want to create the habbit/game of him picking up stuff and me going after him to get it.  there is a lot more I could explain about this but this is the gist of my method, so far so good!
