PBS Oldies but Goodies.

I recently watched two PBS series after I upgraded my Netflix membership. They immediately raised their prices, of course.  Sometimes a DVD can sit here for literally months but now I'm on a tear. I find that the PBS, really usually BBC, productions are done so well. The period pieces have such great costuming, settings and acting. Generally I learn a little history along with being amused.

I first revisited The Jewel in The Crown. Some DK members weren't born when it aired in the US in 1984. You might enjoy some of these old series. It's about  British ruled India during and just after WWII. I loved it and realized, when I heard of a train bombing, on the news, in India the night after I finished the last disc, that some thing never change.

Heat of the Sun was about a detective from Scotland Yard exiled to Kenya. Despite some bad directing and unbelievable characters I enjoyed this 3 part series too. The detective, Trevor Eve, is wonderful and this story also takes place long ago, in the 1930s when Britain was in Kenya. Needless to say, Out of Africa is now near the top of my queue.

I don't watch much TV, but I did love the PBS series The Six Wives of Henry VIII. (At least I think it was originally a PBS series.) I've always been interested in British history, especially the monarchs. I love the movies The Lion in Winter, Becket, Lady Jane, Anne of the Thousand Days, and even The Other Boleyn Girl. (Had to throw that last one in just to prove I have seen some movies made in this century, lol).

There have even been commercial TV series I liked a lot! Rubicon was very interesting before it met it's premature demise. I alos was interested in The Killing last season. I do watch some others but often while reading the paper : ) We'll think of others as time goes on. We should perhaps try to separate movies from Tv but The King's speech, for which I paid a king's ransom in a real movie house and somebody else just mentioned, was excellent. Such a diverse group of people loved it too. I would give it 5 doodles. I think Colin Firth is fab, Loved him in PBS's Pride and Prejudice.

Have you seen Dr. Christiane Northrup's one hour special on PBS? She's the author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom." (I downloaded this book for my iPad - it's terrific.) If you haven't seen this, be on the look out for it and set your DVR to record it, because it's worth watching more than once.
