Lucy's adult coat is coming in. Ugh. What a mess. I brush her, it matts. I brush her it matts.
She has an appointment with the groomer next week. Its SO SO SO hot here. I am thinking of just going really, really short. (She already had a nice summer cut but it grew out pretty fast) The days have gotten up to 105 here. Will taking it down super short help with the matting issue? Does this get better once the adult coat is 100% in? I have cut out some matts bc I know its not comfortable. Its around her collar that is really gettting it bad. She is so good and just lays there and lets me. (Love her)
I love her curls but I need her to feel good too. I will get used to the new drastic cut. (I hope) Ha!
Any advice from someone who has been through this?

I feel your pain! I was so excited for so long when Oscar's hair was so cute and I could brush it every couple of days with no mats... Those times are LONG gone... His adult started coming in a few months ago and it has been a battle ever since. Just like you said the worst places are around his neck because of his collar, right behind his ears, and on his hind legs from lying down. I took him to a groomer that a friend of mine uses and was so so scared of how he would turn out. He was cut very short... I must admit I cried a little at first but then got used to it... The best (or worst depending on how you look at it) thing is that with our doodles the hair grows back pretty quickly. Within a few weeks he was starting to look like his old self with just a shorter more easily maintained coat. It took about 5 or 6 weeks to get back to the length he was but the mats were even worse... He just went for his second cut because it seems like no matter what I do, the mats will come... If you get Lucy cut be sure to tell them to leave her face longer. I assumed that since the same groomer was doing Oscar again this time she would do his face the same and was so disappointed at how short it is. It seems like if their face is still the face you remember it takes the sting out of the rest of the body cut! I don't know if it should get better but from what I have heard this is just what to expect from here on out... The good thing is that the more they mat and have curl means they have more of a hair type coat and will be much less likely to shed... We will just spend thousands on grooming instead! Good luck!
