I was in the Pet store and standing by the checkout counter when a woman came up with a bag of 'cheap' dog food.   I couldn't help overhearing what she said to the checkout guy.  She said she had to buy it because she needed to save money and had to move to a cheaper brand.  This got me wondering if there has ever been a proper cost analysis done here.  Perhaps we could post how much it costs us to feed our dogs per week and perhaps go someway to find out if better foods are much more expensive and if so by how much?

About $30/month (We likely go through 1 30 lb. bag at a cost of $55 a bag every 1.5-2 months)

Just switched Luna to that from Eukanuba Puppy - she loves it so far and is doing very well :)

I figure that with the premium foods, you don't need to feed as much as the cheaper brands so in the end it probably works out about the same!  We feed Acana and we have a 50lb and an 80lb dog.  So one (of the largest bag size) lasts about three weeks.  We rotate between flavours and some of them are significantly more expensive than the others (Ranchlands is about $20 per bag more expensive than the adult dog!!)..... I don't think I really want to try and work out how much I spend on feeding them!

If anyone is tired of running to the pet store for food, I found a reliable company that ships my (fresh) pet food to me for free! They have all the best quality brands (and the not so good quality ones too), discounted up to 25%. I get regular shipments of bagged and canned food, treats for my dog and cat, and they have other items too, every 10 weeks. (They may charge a small fee for smaller orders.) I never have to haul big bags around stores anymore, and I don't worry about running out. it's great. They even pay $ for referrals, so if you are interested, visit http://www.petflow.com/invite/uu573212

Yes, a lot of our members do order their food on-line, and Petflow is one of the companies they use. In fact, I have a discussion here about Petflow, and the fact that they donate to pet charities.

Here's the discussion:

With the addition of andy (AKA piglet) We go through a 30# bag of TOTW every 8 - 9 days, so it cost us about $128/mo to feed 3 Doodles and a Standard Poodle.  (Yes we have ascertained that Andy is, in fact, a Doodle not a Standard Poodle as the shelter posted on petfinder)
I just bought 2 8-lb bags of Primal raw food and 2 big (16 oz) bags of Stella and Chewy's patties... it came to just over $100. It should last at least a month, but I also feed Orijen as her main meal, and the raw and patties are snacks and extra calories for weight gain.
