Max my rescue/rehome was purchased at an upscale pet store in NJ but bred by a Nancy Locke of Corona, SD.....There is absolutely no information on this breeder anywhere on the internet so I am assuming the very worst....Just for clarification...Does anyone out there have a pup pf hers from SD or know anything about her and her breeding practices?

My name is David Locke also originally from Corona, SD. I'm glad I can shed some light on this subject. In reference to all the "dogcrap talk" I have read on your site my parents run a state of the art Kennel. They do sell Golden Retrievers and a few Doodles to some brokers down south. They have heating/airconditioning/birthing areas/cement/fresh water/the list goes on and on. Not to mention they love and care for each pet. These animals have it better than some of us. The real tragedy for any animal are people who can't affort animals or mistreat them. My mom will do all she can to not let ANY dog fall into the wrong hands. As far as inspections go the last one they had my dad said one of the bosses of the USDA inspectors came out from the East to check on his midwest USDA ispectors. He said "this is really nice". If you have any questions or comments for them they do things the old way. No computers involved so I'm sure you can't find anything on them. They really would enjoy comments on how their puppies are doing. Send me an email and I will get any question answered.

Puppies should go directly from their mothers to their forever homes. Period. No brokers, no pet stores-THOSE are the wrong hands. End of story.
Let me ask you where did your pet come from? Like humans dogs do move around once or twice in their life time. We come in contact with other humans that's the way it is. It doesn't mean these dogs aren't loved any less. I'm not sure who brain washed you but most Americans don't have the resources to buy them directly from the breeders so they have to go to the pet stores. Pet stores aren't the enemy infact they can make a child smile. Go to your local store and see. It's the people who buy them and don't take care of them who you should direct your thoughts to. It's a free country last time I checked and yes you can own a business who makes most people happy.
Here's what's wrong with pet stores. This is what you can do in a free country. Doesn't make it right.

PS: You're in the wrong place here. Look around...about 80% of the members here bought their dogs from breeders. At 1200-2800 a pop. Most of the rest of us adopted them from rescue groups & shelters. Guess we're not "most Americans."
All 2100 of us.
Oh, and by the way...how much is that doggy in the window?
"Kennel" to broker- 300
Broker to pet store- 600
Pet store to unsuspecting owner-1200 (negotiable, of course. Aren't all saleable goods?)
Cost of dog born in a cage to untested parents, shipped in a cage to pet store, another cage (no socialization, training, nurturing, etc.)-1200 + lifetime of medical expenses and behavioral problems.
Cost of dog born in loving breeders home, handled, socialized, paper-trained, loved, healthy-1200 +
Hmmm- tough decision: pet store...breeder? pet store...breeder?
Any clues?
Well put!
Dogcrap? Selling to brokers is selling to petstores, not to loving families. It's not selling to someone who has been checked out who has an application of file. Not knowing who is getting your puppies and knowing about your puppies family is the same as what a mill or pet store does. How can anyone KNOW what hands the pups are in, if they sell to a broker? Dogcrap, my foot!
By the formal definition, a puppy mill is a large-scale breeding operation that produces large numbers of puppies for profit. What the formal definition overlooks is that most puppy mills are inhumane in their treatment of breeding dogs and puppies. Many are filthy, and are run by people who have no idea about or concern for the genetic implications of breeding or about what dogs require in terms of basic health care and socialization. Many are simply hellholes in which the breeding dogs are kept in the most deplorable conditions—dogs confined to small wire cages for their entire lives, fed inadequately, kept in unheated buildings, denied basic veterinary care. The breeding dogs are sick, wounded, and malnourished. And their lives are miserable. When their breeding usefulness is over, they may be killed or dumped. Large-scale mills do not take their older dogs to shelters, as a rule, because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves. http://www.almosthomerescue.org/puppymill/puppymill.htm
Simple this isn't the case here. They have every last record for some 18 to 20 years. This would never happen at this Kennel.
Mr. Locke,
As the person who initially posted this discussion, I would like to first apologize to you and to everyone else for not jumping in earlier as I am just catching up on these recent posts. Next, my fellow DK members have expressed their thoughts and certain truths here, beautifully and articulately and I too would like the opportunity to express some of my feelings about the pet trade to you. You seem to be a person who until joining this discussion, was under the impression that pet shops and brokers "are not the enemy because they can bring a smile to a child's face". I found that comment to be most upsetting because it could only be made by a person who is either oblivious to the horrors and atrocities of the pet trade industry or someone who has no regard for the lives of animals.

As Karen and LynneNJ have discussed, this site is a forum for Doodle owners, breeders and enthusiasts. It is a place to chat, meet fellow Doodle inspired people, post questions, concerns, compare notes and bond with others who love these dogs. Many of us are involved in animal rights and dog rescue, have rescue dogs ourselves and have extensive, personal experience with dogs who have survived the horrors of puppy mills, BYB and the pet trade. We are not here to point fingers, we are here to rescue, provide assistance and educate.....We look for any information that we can on the background of our rescues as it helps us to understand the dog and may provide us with explanations in regards to some of the dogs behavior and health issues....A dog that spends it's entire life in a cage or kennel, unsocialized with humans and other dogs is going to have issues no matter how "clean and nice" that kennel or cage may be.....Thanks to the efforts of animal rights groups, individuals and THE ENTIRE WORLD MEDIA it is now UNIVERSALLY UNDERSTOOD that puppy mills, BYBs, pet shops and the brokers who provide them with "inventory" are indeed THE ENEMY!

I can understand that your parents are "old school" but it is highly unlikely that they don't watch TV, read newspapers or have contact with the rest of the modern world and are unaware of the problems with the pet trade. Pardon me for saying so, but by the looks of what I am reading in your posts...you are actually QUITE aware of the issues with the pet trade yet seem to be in complete denial in regards to your parents breeding facility and practices.....If your parents need to be brought up to date with current events and are in need of some basic pet trade education and the finer points of appropriate "reputable breeder etiquette", I invite them to speak to any one of us in rescue and any breeder here on the DK forum .....
Beautifully said, Jacquie. We're glad to have you back!
I'm so sorry to have been out of the loop! Thank you everyone for your posts..especially Karen and Lynne and a great big "You go Man!" to Clark!
Don't bother, Lynne. He doesn't get it. I wonder where his attitudes about pet ownership came from.
