Diaper Genie for Doodles?

It's been awhile since we've had a poop discussion, so I thought I'd start one.

We don't have much of a yard, so I take Halas on walks to do his business. I use the blue poop bags to clean up after him. The problem is the smell created by bags full of poop sitting in a very hot garage during the summer. If I put them directly into the garbage can, the smell is overpowering when I have to open the garbage can to put something else in. This summer, I filled a bucket up half way with cedar mulch, and I put the poop bags in the bucket until garbage day. That has helped a little, but the garage is still pretty smelly. I was talking to my cousins about it a few weeks ago, and they half-jokingly suggested using a diaper genie. They said it works for their baby's poop, so why wouldn't it work for doodle poop? I think they have a point, but I don't have kids, so I've never used a diaper genie. But if it allows you to have dirty diapers around without your house smelling like baby poop, it would probably help a garage smell less like dog poop. Has anyone ever tried this? Or does anyone have a method they use that helps with the smell of multiple poop bags?

We have a garbage bag in the back yard, all poop is picked up right away with a plastic bag and tied in a knot, then thrown in the regular garbage bag. We empty that twice a week.  I don't keep my regular garbage can in the garage because my mom has her stuff stored in there until she moves.

 

I have heard great things about the diaper genie though, Jack only poops at best once a day, Molly on the other hand is pooping five times a day, I can't wait till we switch her food.

I just leave the bags in an open bucket outside. The smell dissipates in the air although the bucket isn't too near the house. When I throw out the garbage from the house I put the poop bags in it.

Leslie, the bad thing about the Diaper Genie is you have to their refill liners which can add up.  I got our DD the Diaper Champ two years ago, it uses regular garbage bags.  She likes using the scented garbage bags and loves it.

Sounds like you can't place the can outside of the garage where you live.  Correct.  Maybe this diaper genie is the way to go.

Wow, someone need to patent as Doggie Genie!! What a great idea!!

I have a poop bag only small trash can outside of the garage.....I was thinking about alternatives as well,  since it seems to attract gross flies......

Kyoko, they make one for cat litter called the LitterLocker.  I'm sure someone has one in works for doggie poo.

My mom has a litter locker-you have to buy the refill cartridge for that too.

I'm in a condo. The set up is a 2 car garage, with a small yard between the garage and the condo itself. So if I put the poop outside, it would have to be in my yard, which would mean it would only be about 20 ft away from the house, at the most. And with a garage on one side, and a 6ft privacy fence on the other 2 sides, there's not a lot of airflow, so the smell would just sit there. Plus, they really encourage that those of us with pets keep our yards clean, so that the people on each side of us don't have to smell a bunch of dog poop.

They even have a pink Diaper Champ...oh my!  For all of those thinking of buying one on Amazon, don't forget to use the DK link at the top of the page!  I buy regular blue poo bags.  I use one as a mitt and place into the second (Rua is a two-per day poo producer...and I don't pick up daily).  I have a plastic sealed kitty litter bucket with a trash liner in it (under the deck).  I open and drop in.  My DH will empty to the garbage can on trash day once it's out of the garage.  The bucket never smells...even with the 90+ degree weather we have had.  So, I really can't justify that cute pink Diaper Champ.  I think my DH would have me committed.
