Pattie Cake is crated at night next to my bed. Every two or three hours during the night she whines. How do you tell the difference between a full bladder and I'm just lonely. When she does this, sometimes I place my fingers in her crate and talk to her, and sometimes I let her out and she always pees. Thanks for your thoughts.
That is about right. 6-12 weeks every 3-4 hrs, 12-16 weeks 4-8 hrs., 4-5 months 8 hrs., 1 year 8-10. Sometimes it is best to set an alarm to wake them up instead of them getting into the habbit of waking up and crying to get out. The first couple nights or so being the hardest.
Every pup is different but the first week I'd take her out when she whines. Then after that start ignoring it and see if she stops...she will SOON be able to make it through the night.
I think I remember reading something like....bladder capacity for pups is 1 hour plus an extra for each month? That's similar to what Tamara & Giada replyed.
We were very lucky, in regards to nightime with Grover. He's slept right through the night since 7 weeks! At 17 weeks, he'll sleep soundly from 10pm to 9AM most nights. While they're sleeping, their body goes into a different mode and they're able to hold it much longer, I believe. During the day, that's a completely different story at our house :( Still outside every hour.
I also read that they do not have complete control over their bladder until at least 16 weeks, so I'm not expecting any miracles soon!
Does Pattie Cake have a favorite stuffed animal to sleep with? We put Grover to bed every night with a large stuffed gorilla and that seems to bring him comfort. If Scrappy steals it out of his crate during the day (just like a jealous sibling!) and we try to put him to sleep without it, he'll usually whine until we realize it's not in there with him.
also, get a battery operated ticking clock and put it on top of the crate......this seemed to calm our puppy down, plus a sheet over the top and sides for darkness.

Yes, we've had Macey for three nights now and have found that each night has gotten better. We now how a ticking clock on top of her crate, we've covered the crate with a big towel, and have a Snuggle Safe warming pad in with her. I'm also waking her up every four hours to go out, but we haven't had any accidents in the crate! Woohoo!
Ollie is almost 11 weeks old. He also sleeps next to our bed in his crate. When we brought him home at 8 weeks old, he would whine and we'd take him out about every 2-3 hours (about 2-3 times during the night). We also had a snuggle puppy in his crate which seemed to help. That only lasted about a week and then he got to the point where he only had to go out once, usually at about 3:00 in the morning. This past week he's been sleeping through the night for at least 7-8 hours. I'm so proud of him! We haven't had any messes in his crate at night (but he's still working on having an accident free day!).
I am new to this site but have a puppy so would like to be in this group! Our 10 week old puppy has been sleeping through the night since the 3rd night with us, but he does sometimes have accidents in the crate. He doesn't bark or whine at all at night though..Should we be waking him up to go out? I hate to break a good nights sleep, but if he's having to go then not sure what to do?
If he has accidents in his crate overnight, I'd plan to get up halfway through the night.... Do you leave fabric in his crate? If so he might be using it as a toilet...many pups prefer to pee on absorbent surfaces.

Yes, I'd definitely set an alarm to wake your pup up once during the night. Even if she is sound asleep, she will go out and go to the bathroom. Without any talking or playtime, she will go right back to sleep. We're accident free in the crate at this point!
