After trimming my ALD's hair in front her eyes, I realize I probably need to use thining shears instead of scissors. Recommendations on good thinning shears? I don't need the best on the market, but a decent quality pair.

You are right, you do not need the best on the market. I use a pair that were my mothers. She's 86. These shears are old and do a great job.
I'm new to the whole thing so I don't know if these are the best.  But, I bought a pair of 4" thinning shears (not pointy either) on PetEdge for $16.  They are the size we all used in first grade and very good for getting near the eye.  They work very well but PetEdge will charge a fee if you don't order a certain amount. I think they charge a $6 or $7 fee if your total order isn't over $50 or $60 (can't remember which).  Even with that, they were the least expensive that I found.
The ones I'm currently using for Lachlan I picked up at Sally Beauty Supply for around $14. I'm very happy with 'em.
I would say look for ones with adjustable overlap - that way you can decide how much you like to thin at a time. Other than that, I have a really cheap pair from petsmart and they work fine.
