So far I have made Hattie some sweet potao chews---they turned out great! Today I have apples and kiwi and peaches in for both Hattie and I and tomorrow is chicken jerky for Hattie. Has anyone made chicken jerky in the dehydrator and can offer tips? I bought a Nesco brand from Amazon by the way. Dehydrators have come a long way!

PS-Hattie has been dry all day!!! Yippee!

Glad to hear the good news and looking forward to hearing more dehydrator adventures.
Yeah Hattie!  Everything sounds so yummy!

Glad to hear you are making your own jerky. We started preparing our own Jerky in a Nesco last month. I started out slicing 1/4" strips of chicken breast and dehydrating for about 5.5 hours. The second batch we made we we bought Costco chicken tenders that were already sliced, $2.58 / LB and they dehydrated in around 4 hours. No chemicals or preservatives were added, just plain healthy chicken and the Doodles love their Jerky treats. We next tried some steak jerky and I tried some of that, was great for me and the Doodles.

After paying $26.00 / lb for Chinese jerky with all the chemicals and reading the health dangers from Chinese Jerky the Dehydrator has saved us lots of money and gave us a sense of feeding a proper diet.

Dried fruit and veges are next.

Chicken jerky is easy,  this is Lee and I am the Jerk in the family,  LOL. We made the first batch by pre cooking the chicken breast. After speaking with the owner of our local holistic  gourmet  pet food shop,    http://www.fiestapetdeli.com/     they suggested to cook it raw and said not a problem. They make tons of jerky, supply all kinds of special pet diets and even deliver to those priviledged wealthy pooches. We cooked the next batch raw and it looks the same as the cooked batch but easier to dehydrate by eliminating  the cooking step. The bottom steak I dehydrated  raw and it came out great. Doodles gobbled that right up.  Keep in mind it takes a lot more meat to wind up with a pound of jerky, at least three pounds to one.

:-) let us know about dehydrator. I have been wanting to do same

Yay! for Hattie!!!! This is a big deal!
The dehydrator sounds amazing. Really happy to hear that Hattie is doing well!

Way cool about Hattie.

Good luck with the dehydrator....may I ask what model you purchased and how you chose it?

OK, Sandy.  I love your fun ways to use your new dehydrator, but your PS ...please tell me that it has nothing to do with your new dehydrator!  :})
Sounds like a great idea! How long do you think the chicken jerky will stay good? Glad Hattie is a dry doodle now!
That's brilliant news on the dry  front and I'm really excited about the dehydrator too as I've jut ordered one.  I think the chicken will work out just fine but let us all know and add the info to the Group for Doggy food recipes please. X
WOW!  SOOOO glad to hear the news for Hattie!  I tried to dehydrate sweet potatoes in the oven... wasn't too successful!  But I think I'm going to add this to my Christmas list (and get it early).  tori has jaws of a shark... how long does say one stick last for Hattie?  I don't like to give her store bought treats as she has a sensitive tummy.  but I'm lovin' what I am hearing!  I'll be watching for some more great ideas!  Thanks!
