Oh no! I'm so scared, Bonne Bouche has had a bit of blood at the end of his soft stools. I need some help from the DK crew. Last night was the first night off of his "preventative" Albon 7day medication that the breeder started him on. So he's been off that for about 36 hours now.

Last night, BB had a big poop mostly solid with some liquid at the end about 20 minutes before dinnertime. We fed 1 cup of food right around 7, and he didnt make a BM afterwards. Even after several walkings.

We knew before bed when he didnt have a BM since dinner that he'd wake us in the middle of the night (hadn't happened yet). He did, about 3:30 DH got up and took him out. Even though he was right in front of the door, he couldn't hold it and had a big mostly soft stool, took a few steps and a few dribbles of liquid. Then outside a pee and more mostly solid poop.

This morning at 7ish, was very similar. DH brought him to the door and he pounced on the door as he was taught, but as he was opening the door BB  squatted to produce some liquidy soft "soft serve"-like poo with a "pinhead drop" size of red at the end. He pounced on the door 10 minutes later and so I took him out, but he could only squeeze out a few drops of liquid. We were very worried and sad for him at this point!

We fed him his morning breakfast after about 7:30 and he only ate half. (at this point I started to get very worried!) after about 15 mins he looked at the door so I took him out. Pee and Poop. This time the poop was very soft, and had a few drops of liquid at the end, with a drop of red.

He came back in and seemed mostly fine. Played a little, drank some water, and within the hour finished his breakfast. He seemed alert mostly, if not slightly more tired than normal. Eyes seem bright. He's drinking a normal amount, which is good. He's been a bit more sleepy than normal. (my husband suggests if he was up last night with intestinal discomefort, he may just be making that up), Also we did have the time change, so his "clock" may be slightly off.

Last thing I want to mention - Saturday and Sunday we took him for a nice long walk in the back woods behind our house. Its mostly secluded, and only a few other people go back there. He LOVED it! We thought since it was essentially private that it would be safe.

There is a creek back there that runs through it, and at one point he picked up what we thought was a stick but instead was a dead crayfish. My husband thinks this may be the culpret. I also think it may be that he is still getting used to changing over food from Iams to TOTW. We are trying to do it slowly, but maybe not slowly enough? Now we are on a 25/75 TOTW mix, which we did over the period of 8 days.

DK community - Are we over-reacting? I called the vet, and she said we can have an apt for 3:45 today. I can cancel it if we feel he doesnt need it whe the time rolls around. If emergency, we could probably move it forward, too. What do you think?

BB has had the vaccine for Giardia, and was wormed at the breeders. He's had his 9week shot (Duramune Max 5), that was actually administered on the day we picked him up from the breeder. When we went to the vet Wedneday, she did a Fecal, which he tested negative for, and then told us she wasn't surprised since he was on Albon that she'd be surprised that anything would show up.

He was just napping for a bit and now is up and about playing with a milk jug. We really do love him so much already!!!

I can certainly understand how upsetting this is with such a young puppy.  I tend to be a little "over cautious", but I would definitely keep the Vet appointment later today.  I sure hope things improve, and please let us know how things turn out.  Good Luck!
The blood is what is of most concern with the diarrhea and so I suggest keeping the vet visit. We had some issue with diarrhea when working on de-worming and our vet told us to switch to a bland diet for a few days and then slowly switch back to kibble. We would boil some chicken and make white rice and serve that to our doodle. That quickly fixed the diarrhea issue for us, so you could give that a try.

Bright red blood at the end of a poo means that the blood is coming from some irritation very close to the exit site of the poo (anus, or possibly a little irritation in the rectum). This is NOT going to be concerning to the vet. Now if you have diarrhea with blood IN the stool (this will look very black and tar-like) then THAT is a big concern (parvo, or something else). This just sounds like regular diarrhea (which sometimes happens, just like in people) with a little bowel irritation. If you are switching foods right now there is a good chance that is it.

Of course you can keep your vet appointment if you want to, but if it was my dog I would watch him and continue the food switching. Some dogs just have more sensitive tummies than others when it comes to changing foods.

Thanks for your very detailed response, I very much appreciate your knowledge. IT reassured me a lot, and we ruled out the other possibilities, now onto a rice/hamburger diet, YUM!

Thanks!

This detailed post was very helpful for me. Cooper has started having the drops of bright red blood at the end of his loose stool (started this morning). He is VERY mouthy and is constantly trying to put every piece of garbage in his mouth, and sticks too, so I'm hoping he just ate something that bothered his stomach (or perhaps a piece of stick caused irritation on the way out!?). I dropped off a stool sample this morning to hopefully rule some things out but the different examples you provided helped to ease my mind a bit. He seems fine in all other ways (eating, playing etc...). Hopefully it's nothing serious!!

Thanks everyone for the great info (as always).

We just got back from the vet, and the stool sample came back negative for Giardia and Coccidia. Good news!

We decided against a full vet visit, as I'm not sure what exactly she'd tell us other than he "looks good". From my own research, and the feedback from those here, it seems like he just has an upset stomach from soemthign he ate (crayfish?) or just from the switch in food. Regardless he's going to be on a hamburger and rice diet for the next few days, and then we'll slowly move him to TOTW. If it doesnt get better in 2 days we'll do more tests, but at this point, he isn't having explosive diarrhea, only very loose, and the blood was just at the very end. Its even gotten a bit better since rice this afternoon.

Thanks for all your help!!!!

p.s. sorry for repost, don't know why the thread was duplicated in the first place!!

Any particular reason you are going with hamburger instead of chicken and rice?
Vet sugested Hamburger. We're open to Chicken, is that better? I'm going to assume yes, otherwise you wouldn't be asking?
Well, hamburger naturally has a higher fat content than white chicken meat. The higher the fat content, the more likely it is to upset a sensitive tummy. Usually when talking about putting a dog on a "bland diet" it is chicken and rice. So I am surprised the vet said hamburger. I have not heard one vet I have worked for ever suggest that for a bland diet. I would go with boiled chicken and brown rice, personally.

I told my husband to pick up the most "fat free" ground beef he can, our grocery store usually carries 95 or 99% (some ridiculously high amount -- i forget). And chicken. We'll go with the chicken for now. Thank you.

50/50 chicken & rice. He's also getting pumpkin and Yogurt.

He did just come of antibiotics, so that may be the problem. I worry about too much too soon, so He'll likely get either pumpkin or yogurt tonight, not sure which.

Hi Carla, I was under the impression yogurt would give a puppy runny poo. I'm not sure if it's true, just something I heard...

Our Ayla's stool was like that the first few days we had her!  That scared me too!  I cried at the vet, thinking the worse. Our vet gave us medication for giardia. But my other pup had giardia too , before, and was taking Albon (yellow fluid in syringe) . But Ayla's meds were different. I had to give her this pill (Metronidazole) by mouth . It was really hard to give to her, she did'nt like taking it, enven though it was tiny!  Also she has to   take  2 other powder packets in her meal , to help with her stool.   I'm thinking, also, i had such a small amount of food given to me by the breeder to transition , that i did'nt slowly transition.    She is a bit sensitive.

Barley had two rounds of giardia as a puppy and he would have "Carvel"-looking poop. I've been told that sometimes the fecal test can produce a false negative. I was really paranoid because sometimes Barley would have blood in his stool (as you are describing), and sometimes it would look okay. I was in tears about the blood and I took photos of the bloody stool to show my vet in case there wasn't any blood in the stool sample. Anyway, it turned out he had giardia again. I think he got it from eating soil. Barley is now 16 months old and he's fine. He was just really mouthy outside when he was younger and kept getting the giardia. It's very prevalent in our soil. Barley also had a very sensitive stomach. It helped to change his food to a single protein source. He did very well on Fromm's Four-Star Nutritionals Pork and Apple Sauce. He now has much fewer Carvel poops!

BB had a good hours worth of zoomies where I started to feel much better, at 11, he started pawing his food bowl like crazy, so I fed him 3/4 cup food and 1/4 rice. He scarfed it down like nobody's business (so much for loss of appatite). I again felt much better. Took him outside to do business, and vomited up a tiny chunk of his food. This scared the he77 out of me. He then pooped a pretty liquidy diarrhea with a tinge of blood. Came in to call the vet, they said he probably just ate his food to fast (which he did).

I'm def going at 3:45 for the apt. I have the newest feces for a fecal test, he's napping now. I'm so worried for him, I can hardly focus on my work... ;-/

--> I know it's scary, but I'm sure your vet will be able to ease your mind. Keep in mind that a very sick puppy will probably   ----->not be hungry and won't feel like playing. It's possible that he still just has giardia or another kind of parasite, or maybe ---->a food intolerance. I'm sure you'll feel better after 3:45! When Barley had similar problems, I made homemade food of ---->cooked hamburger mixed with rice. I fed him that for two or three days while slowly introducing him back to his food.
