With the cooler weather, Gavin was a big bundle of energy this morning and I figured our regular walk just wouldn't do it.  So DH and I took him to the park with my tennis raquet and his tennis balls.  I began smashing balls the entire length of the park.  He ran and retrieved,  ran and retrieved, ran and retrieved until he just lied down.  He was spent and it did not take long at all.  He is now happily passed out at me feet.  What took me so long to put two and two together?

We used Tennis Courts for months when Spud was a puppy.  It is hard to find a court open but it is a GREAT PLACE to exercise a dog off leash.

My yard is a MUD HOLE.  Thanks for reminding me of this great idea.  I may just head down the street myself

There's an add for a tennis ball machine on this page now....That's what we all need!
Tennis balls are the only way JD would ever get enough exercise. And you're right, it doesn't take long at all. About 15 minutes of hard running and retrieving, with no breaks, and he lets me know he's done!

Tennis balls are great but they should come with a warning!

Warning: Tennis balls may cause an expansion in your abdominal girth.

Throwing the tennis ball for your dog does not get you any exercise.

Quincy loves playing fetch so much that I used this as his major form of exercise. I finally clued in when I went up a pant size!

LOL Donna.  Since getting Gavin two years ago, I am getting more exercise than ever.  I walk 3-5 km every day.  So why when I went to the doctor last week did he reveal that I have gained 10 lbs in past two years?!?  Good thing its still a 3 km round trip to walk to "good"  park :)
Good walk increases the appetite! :)))
Thank you - yes!  That's what we will go with!
LOL Donna!
I love this idea, and we have tennis courts in our complex.  The only problem is there is a "no dog rule" for the courts, and our nasty "dog hating" neighbors who don't agree with us that Murphy is a "small dog" would certainly be reporting us.

Rules, smules!  Dress the boys up in tennis attire and no one will know the difference.

That would be a funny sight!
The problem is that both boys are charter members of the Naked Doodles Club!
