Hi

Has anyone given their doodles pig snouts treats?  I found some at an organic dog shop the owner claimed they are great ~ better then pig ears.  According to the label they are from a USDA facility, no additives or preservatives.

Thoughts???

Seems fine to me. I'm not sure how they could be "better" than pig ears...better how? The dogs like them better? But as long as the actual source is North America, they should be fine.
Karen, I heard from a vet tech that pork can give dogs pancreatitis. Do you know anything about that? Do ears and snouts fall into the same category of pork?

We have another recent discussion about this somewhere on DK.

It's not that pork itself can give a dog pancreatitis. It's a large amount of fat at one time. Pork is a fatty meat. If a dog ate a large amount of any high fat food...a lb. of fatty beef, a lb. of fatty lamb, a pound of fatty chicken or turkey with the skin, etc....the risk is the same. The risk is in high fat meals, not in the particular protein source. But because certain cuts of pork are higher in fat than other meats, you hear about pork. Actually, lots of dogs end up in the emergency room  with pancreatitis at Thanksgiving and Christmas from eating too much turkey, gravy, whatever was served. There are lots of excellent quality kibbles that contain pork, and they're fine for dogs. I've given JD a few bits of plain pork meat with all fat removed. It's the quantity and the fat that's a problem.

The pig ears and snouts do not contain fat, so that's not an issue. But that doesn't mean any given dog wouldn't have digestive issues with them. It's just like people. My husband couldn't eat green peppers, they just didn't agree with him. I had no problem with them.

Thanks--this is very helpful information!
Interesting . . . Dakota eats pigs ears like potato chips--maybe the snouts would last longer??
I would just be worried that they would be super stinky!!!  But it's probably fine.
I've given one to allie before. They last about 45 seconds! But she did love it!
I have given pig snouts to Casper - they are kind of puffy &  they don't stink...they certainly don't last long!
