We brought home 8 week old Oliver on Sunday, so he has only been with us for a few days.

Yesterday he started attempting to hump my leg. He's learning very quickly what "NO" and an accompanying tug from his leash means, so much so that if he grabs something bad to chew on and I say "NO" he will drop whatever it is right away.

Today the attempting to hump has continued, however, he now whimpers a little bit before he tries to mount my leg.... He stops immediately when I say NO and give him a little tug, but I'm wondering why he is doing this...and why the whimper as well?

Apparently there are two schools of thought to this: 1) he's too excited and attempting to release it the easiest way possible, or 2) he's trying to dominate me. I know it's normal for puppies to do this to each other, but how do I properly keep him from doing this to ME? Does it depend on the reason behind him doing it in the first place?

He has not done this to my husband (who has not had a lot of alone time with him; I'm usually the one spending all of my time with him), and he has not tried to do this to our 7 year old female chihuahua. Any info or advice as to what to do would be appreciated!

Dogs hump for dominance.....It's not sexual. Riding up on another dog's back raises the first dog above him. It is a reminder to the other dog that says "Hey, you're not the boss here! I am!" The mounting dog is trying to seize control over all others. When the dog mounts another one's head, he is going to one of the most extreme displays of dominance in the dog world. The head is the highest part of the dog. Bringing the head down brings the dog down from his highest point. It is all about who is higher than whom. I think your pup like all pups is practicing exercising his authority...If he does this to you again try telling him "no" and turning him over on his back and holding him there for a few seconds.....This lets him know in "dogspeak" that you are the boss....
It sounds like they are working it out!..lol.....Lucy is now letting Sophie know that she can't push her around....As you are alpha, Lucy is now challenging Sophie for position.....
how come he only humps me and not my husband? (i'm way more dominant than my husband!)
My vet told me it was a sign of affection. Especially when they are overly excited, not sexually, but overly stimulated particularly in puppies when they are learning to express themselves.
I'm assuming that you are the person who spends the most time with him?......That would be one of the reasons.....
Cealeach humps Bella all the time. I actually have to laugh to see our scrawny 10 month old Doodle humping a 150 lb Mastiff! LOL
Lacie humps pillows, Lily humps Abby and Mia grabs hold of my legs and attempts to hump, And they are all females! LOL!!! I just tell them...NO! NO! NO!....No Humperdoodles!!! LOL! I honestly think its just nature!
I honestly had no idea that females "humped" also. What an education I am getting! LOL

Let me also say that being humped by my dog was the most action that I've experienced in months!...LOL!
