Hello-

Does anyone have experience with a pup with an umbilical hernia?

Our breeder said my little guy (8 weeks) and one other in the litter had hernias, they weren't serious, and that the vet recommended it gets closed at the same time he is neutered - at 4 months. I thought 4 months was a bit young to be neutured, so I guess my question is about that as well. He is super happy and never pays attention to the hernia, which I can clearly feel on his belly, and his stool is much improved since switching him to a higher quality food which tells me his insides are doing ok.

I look forward to hearing any comments about umbilical hernias in addition to a neuter at 4 months.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Harley had a umbilical hernia also.  We had her spayed at 6 months and Doc took care of hernia at the same time.....we had no adverse reactions whatsoever.
Camus has an umbilical hernia that was not repaired (as it should have been) when he was neutered at the shelter at 12 months.  It is small and his vet checks it periodically.  He does not want to operate unless it becomes absolutely necessary, unless something else occurs that requires surgery, at which time he would repair the hernia.  I think you should ask your vet for his/her opinion on how long you can wait to repair the hernia.
Fudge had one too. The breeder let me know before we got her and I was concerned. My vet told me just to get it fixed when she got spayed and that usually it is no big deal. Turns out my vet was correct in regards to Fudge. Fudge was fixed around 6 months of age.
