For years I have heard many of you rave about the product, Thornit for dogs ears.

When I do an internet search I find the product with the name Thornit in Europe.  On Amazon, Bizrate, and other sites I am finding this product ~ R-7.  That is all that is offered when I do the search.

Are they the same?  I also see the same yellow container but if you read real close it looks like a different product.

Can any of you give me ideas here on which product you use.  What are the differences in these products?  Is this what you buy or something else?

R-7 Ear Powder 12 GMPOWDER - remove hair

I don't really want to remove hair.  Every time I do, that is when I have the problems even if I touch the ears once, the infections start.  Leave well enough alone.

R-7 Ear CremeCREAM - drying ears

Then there is also a cream.  The cream, with the same bottle color and design does not contain Rosin Grip. That is another question; Is Rosin Grip the main ingredient?  I really don't know about a cream since both of my dogs ears are so moist all the time.

Since I am confused can you help me with these questions?

  • Is this the same product?  Is R-7 the same as Thornit or is this just what comes up in the search?  Is this product sold in the US?
  • If this is what you use, do you buy both products? Or just one?  Which one?
  • Is Rosin Grip the ingredient I am looking for?   The powder has the ingrediant where the cream does not
  • Where do you purchase Thornit if you use it?
  • Why am I getting R~7 and not finding a product named THORNIT?

I have book marked a recipe to make it at home but first I want to try it before I spend all money to make the product myself.

Nancy, yes it is a preventative.  I put it in the ear canal...small amount.  just do it once a month or after swimming, bathing .
Thanks.  I really need to get this for our Springer then.

Hi Joanne, I posted a discussion about Winston's ears in the health group and the topic of thorn it came up. I was planning on getting some because lots of people rave about it. However, Karen, always the voice of reason, gave a devil's advocate point of you that you might be interested in. That being said, I'm not entirely disuaded from ordering it since some folks feel so strongly about how well it works, but I thought you'd be interested in reading about it nonetheless.

Thanks Sherri, I remember the post and reread the information from the link you just gave me.

I use the Epi-Otic and anti-biotics, and and and    LOL

This is a preventive not an antibiotic.  Spud has one bad ear and Starlit well she has her own stinky issues but no infection.

We shall see.  Thanks for responding to my discussion Winston's ear are probably so nice now.  How wonderful for him.  Bless his heart. Hope all is well with you

Thanks Joanne, His ears are looking great! no more smell lol. Good luck with your dood's ears. keep me posted on how the thornit works for you.
Joann, Quincy is also prone to ear infections and has been treated with antibiotics twice. I started using a product by Four Paws called Medicated Ear Powder. It really has only one ingredient which is Boric Acid ( anti fungal, anti bacterial) and an inert amorphous drying base. It has been welll over a year since he has had an ear infection despite all the swimming he did this summer. I only use the powder every couple of weeks and sometimes less. I'm not sure if it's the powder that's helping or if we just got lucky. It is available at Petsmart and other pet supply stores. Good luck with those ears. The Boric Acid is also one of the ingredients in the Thornit ear powder.
It's here.  Took less than 2 weeks to arrive.

Rosin grip helps you grab the hairs for plucking, it is not a healing agent.  R7 is not the same as Thornit

As always, Thank you, Barb.  Explains a lot.
