NUPRO's quality ingredients are as follows:

DESICCATED LIVER:The ultimate in palatability! This fresh, natural flavor of real liver is wonderful for the finicky eater because when mixed with water, makes a great gravy that dogs crave. Supplies iron and B vitamins

NORWEGIAN KELP:A natural seaweed that is a rich source of trace minerals including iodine, which is used for proper glandular function and metabolism. An excellent source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and E. These vitamins are beneficial for maintaining proper health and are responsible for the growth of bones, a healthy heart rate, a sound central nervous system, and helping muscles stay firm and strong. Norwegian kelp grows deep in the ocean, mostly in cold waters, so it contains valuable nutrients from the ocean floor. Aside from nourishing the glands, it is beneficial for overall good health. Supports healthy pigmentation and coat highlights.

MICROPULVERIZED BEE POLLEN:One of nature’s healthiest and most powerful ‘superfoods.’ Bee pollen contains an incredible array of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. It’s one of the most nutritionally complete natural substances found on earth. Supports a healthy immune system. Keeps healthy hormones in balance. Supports allergy protection.

IMPORTED YEAST CULTURE:Helps maintain a full and healthy coat which may minimize the occurrence of excessive shedding, hot spots and itchy, dry fur. Provides proteins, zinc and biotin. Best source of B vitamins. Most companies use cheaper brewers yeast which can be a combination of hops, corn, grains, wheat, etc., whatever comes from the brewery. Many animals have grain allergies, and this ingredient may further aggravate an allergy condition. With nutritional yeast culture, it is grown on sugar beets, a veggie source, so NO grains are present at all. Something to think about when reading ingredient labels.

FLAXSEED AND GROUND BORAGE SEED:Provides essential fatty acids. Most absorbable vegetable fatty acid for the canine. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid, fiber and lignans. Helps maintain healthy shiny fur and soft skin.

LECITHIN: A rich source of choline, which the body requires to make acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which is essential for normal, healthy nerve and brain function. Supports healthy liver function, too.

GARLIC CONCENTRATE:Wonderful ingredient that does so much for the body. Garlic contains allicin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial capable of warding off different types of infection. Supports a healthy immune system.

LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS:Promotes healthy digestion which may reduce the occurrence of flatulence. Because NUPRO is in a powdered form and not from concentrate, it is easily assimilated into the system and digested with the dog’s food. There is no sense in giving an animal this superior product if they don’t digest it properly. Also promotes friendly bacteria in intestinal tract.

CALCIUM CITRATE: Calcium is best absorbed in an acidic environment, hence calcium citrate is the best absorbed supplemental form of calcium---it does not require extra stomach acid for absorption. Intended to provide nutritive support for healthy bones, teeth and nerve function.
That's funny- I just left a comment on the "Homecooking" discussion asking for info about adding digestive enzymes to home-cooked diets. This is another area where we need fact-based info- what should we add, WHY should we add it, etc.
Maybe you can tell us what led you to using the Nupro products, Jacquie, and let's hear from anyone else who uses supplements based on scientific reasons (and not because "someone told me it was good"), LOL!
I have been alternating between adding plain yogurt, Solid Gold SeaMeal containing Prozyme and a Probiotic Supplement from Nutri-Vet. I also add Bone Meal and Tast of the Wild Suppliment and Missing Link Supplement. I alternate every week with a different combination, thinking that I can balance over time rather than "Complete and Balanced" as the dogfood companies advocate. I feel this is closer to natural feeding. I get everything from onlynaturalpet.com. But reading books like Dr. Pitcairns really helps.
Lynne..maybe you know something about this...I was told by many doctors and vets that Acidophilus and Bifidus Regularis must be LIVE cultures in order to be beneficial....In the case of humans and dogs alike we would have to ingest between 15-20 12oz yogurts a day to get the appropriate amount of live cultures into our systems....I was told that powdered or vitamin form Acidophilus, Bifidus Regularis or any other probiotic cultures are basically useless as the cultures are NOT live.....They MUST be in a concentrated, REFRIDGERATED, liquid form in order to be LIVE cultures....
Jac, I am not that up on this subject but The Natural Health Bible (Messonnier) says that there are many types of probiotics and yogurt is one option. The container label should guarantee "living Acidophilus or Bulgarics at the time of purchase, not just at the time of manufacturing." Supplements are available for those who are lactose intolerant. Do some checking on this but I know that I cannot stomach yogurt and when I take antibiotics I take a supplement.

The Probiotic I use for the dogs says it includes "Saccharomyces boulardii and Pediococcus acidilactici" which "have demonstrated the most promise for use in diarrhea caused by intestinal bacterium," also according to Messonnier. Bifidus is not mentioned for help with diarrhea. So I gather that there are many types and various supplements available. I don't know if this helps. Just like anything else, research, research, research.
Help! I need an edible or chewable glucosamine/chondroitin supplement!
I was all set to finally switch Jack off the crappy Nutro Natural Choice L & R/Wellness-food-which-he-hates combo, onto the NV Prairie formulas; the problem had been that the NV doesn't have any glucosamine or chondroitin- most of the higher end foods don't. I really can't stand to have to give him another pill/supplement that he has to be forced to swallow; there are times of the year I'm forcing 8-9 pills per day down his throat. So I was thrilled to find "Happy Hips" jerky-style treats with G-C...they come in a duck variety, which Jack can have, and he loves them! They're pricey, but so is everything about Jackdoodle. Anyway, today it occurs to me to look at where they're made, and guess what? China!
The total ingredients are duck breast, glucosamine, chondroitin, and vitamin E "supplement"- but now I'm scared about the actual ingredients. I need advice- how bad could they be? Any suggestions for something else with G/C that he can actually chew?
Karen, in my onlynaturalpet.com catalog they have a liquid and a chewable G&C supplement called Lubri-Ease. The liquid is $19.99 for 16oz and chewable is 250 for $29.99. It might be a place to start. Let me know.
I called the company that makes Happy Hips, Dogswell, today, and was told that they guarantee that every one of their products is tested in their TN center BEFORE packaging, and that there is no melamine or other chemicals, etc. They claim the duck used is "cage free, all natural" duck, and that the product has NO: hormones, antibiotics, byproducts, fillers, BHA/BHT, artificial flavors, sugar, salt, corn, wheat, flour or soy. If it is only a matter of dehydrating the duck to make the jerky, it SHOULD be okay.
Jack is just so darn fussy; he barely will take any kind of treat, even the homemade peanut butter dog cookies from the fancy kosher dog bakery. The obedience class instructor couldn't get over the fact that she just could not bait him with any kind of food. he will not even take a piece of banana, or any kind of veggie or fruit, even raw carrots, which every dog I've had loved. I just don't think he'll take a chewable type supplement; he even stopped taking the pill pockets he used to love. Really, he needs to move to NJ...if YOU can't tempt him, there's no hope- LOL.
Maybe try the liquid. It says has a beef broth flavor. I use the Dogswell prods too. I did the same thing after the jerkey recalls. I called the comany and was told the same thing, that's why I keep them. My guys just love, love them.
That's good enough for me, partner. I think I'll stick with the jerky...at least until he gets sick of that, too, LOL!
Forgot to add that I also called onlynatural pet where I started getting them from and they said they did some checking on the company too and would not sell problem products. So no problem...no worries??? If he likes them and gets his G&C keep it going.
After reading your info here, I read more on the internet and decided to go with the Nupro. They have their warehouse in Matawan, NJ. I asked if I could come their and pick it up - they said yes. Thrilled to save on the shipping.
I also asked if I should be getting Samantha their Nupro Joint. I was told to wait until she is a year unless she had joint disease (and the goodness she does not). Just thought I would share.
Thank you Jacquie and Lynn for sharing your research
Adrianne
