Excited Pee

Our precious Polly is 4 1/2 months old now.  She has been completely house broken - no accidents - for over two months.  In the past two weeks, she has started to do the "excited pee" when people walk in the door.  It doesn't matter if she has just been outside 20 minutes prior to someone walking in the door, she will still go.  This morning my boyfriend had been up for a few hours.  He came back in the bedroom to get ready for work and she was once again so excited, she left dribbles on the rug.  Have any of you had experience with this?  Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior?

Lucie did this as a puppy (and still occasionally at 2). I would recommend keeping in mind that they really have no control over it, but it will get better as she gets older and there are a few things you can do to minimize it. 

- when possible have "really exciting people" meet puppy outside

- when you think she will get in the really excited state (when returning from being gone, new people, etc) don't pet her or give her direct attention for a few minutes until she calms down a little. I remember it being somewhat difficult to train guests not to pet her when they came over, but it did work really well. After 5 minutes she was in a less excited state of mind.

- sometimes it will be unavoidable, have a washable rug by the front door or where ever the excitement peeing usually occurs

 

Before you know it most things won't be SO exciting to Polly and it will happen less frequently :) Until then, try to figure out when it is most likely to happen and change what you can to make it less inconvenient. It seems to be pretty common in excitable young doodles

Bergen also did this at her age.  Our dog trainer at the time told us its one of those things you just have to be patient with and wait until they grow out of it.  Bergen's now almost 7 months old and the only time she'll have these excited pees is when she REALLY has to go and we run into someone new.  Other than that, her "normal" excitement she can control.  Good luck!

Thanks everyone.  Sounds like it's a more common doodle behavior than I realized.  We will take everyone's advice and just wait it out!
