Hello all.  Yesterday morning, Peri woke up and her eye was shut and all gooey.  I cleaned it up and trimmed her hair around her eyes and then made a dr. appointment for her at 5pm yesterday.

When I returned home to pick her up, it looked much better - not perfect, but better.  I decided to keep the appointment and take her in.  Here comes the craziness...

We were waiting in the room to see the vet (I also had Tacky because we were going straight to see my sis who is in town after).  Kept waiting and there is so much commotion going on - people running, two dogs HOWLING in pain like you may have never heard before (I had not).  Vet tech comes in and apologizes and said there is a medical emergency and only one doctor on staff (weird!).  I say it's okay and wait about 5 minutes longer.  But the noise continues and meanwhile, Peri is crying with her head buried in between my legs. Taquito is shaking and wincing uncontrollably, you get the point.  I had to get the dogs outta there.

i went outisde and asked the front desk if I could leave - and told them clearly the vet had emergencies and ours was not.  The lady looked frantic, but relieved that I offered this and said "there are now TWO emergencies, I am so sorry you had to wait".  I said NO PROBLEM I am sorry you had to deal with us during this!  I hated taking up their time.

Needless to say, that was a painful experience and the vet never saw Peri.

So I posted this for two reasons:

1) I am thankful those were not my two dogs on the operating table last night (I cried for the owners (if applicable) when I left).

2) Peri's eye looked better today, but still had a little goo in the corner and it is not completely open fully like the other.  I am off work at 3 today for....wait for this....12 days!  Should I see how it is after work and what should I look for that would make me want to take her in tomorrow?  THOUGHTS?

Thanks DK friends.  Merry Christmas and Happy Hannakah to you all.

Yes, I actually think she has been flushing whatever it was naturally with her tears.  It definitely is not worse  I think it may be clearing up.  But the vet is open Thurs. and Friday so I can always take her in (and I will be home!).

What a nightmare!  I think Karen's advice is right on target (as usual!).

This sounds like a horrible experience! Sadie had doggie conjunctivitis when she was a puppy--the eye drops that the vet gave us took care of it almost instantly. Her eyes were gooey/crusty with a greenish-yellow discharge. The only thing they cautioned me about was that if it was a scratched cornea and not conjunctivitis, then the medication (which I think had a steroid in it) would make it worse and not better. But because she had it in both eyes they felt that I could take the chance.

What a traumatic vet visit!!! Poor Choodle and poor YOU!  I would have her eye checked if it still looks irritated later today. I had a retriever who received some sort of eye injury while I was on vacation and had a house sitter caring for him. He received no care until we got home :(. By then he had developed a cornea ulcer and required surgery!!  So...just sayin'...

Good advice - thank you!  If it is not totally cleared up this afternoon, i will take her back.

I hope Choodle are over their tough experience.  I'm sure that, besides all of the noise, they could just sense that those dogs were in a lot of pain.  I can see why that would upset them.  Good luck getting Peri's eye cleaned up.  Maybe some of the recommended solutions will help.

I did run into this once at my Vet, but there was no howling or crying....just a very long wait.  It was a dog who had been hit by a car, and my Vet was giving emergency care until the owners could be located or animal control could get there to transport him to the Emergency Clinic.  I'm sure this was very stressful for Peri and Tacquito (and you too).  I sure hope that eye continues to get better...hopefully it's just an irritation and not an infection.  Happy Holidays to you too Allyson!

Yikes that was a horrible experience and I would have got out fast too. Riley has had gooey eyes from rolling in something disgusting and I have used an antibiotic ointment for human eyes which worked perfectly.  I met the vet and he just said that it's the same one used for both and to use it for at least five days to make sure it cleared completely.  I also washed his eyes with a saline solution (boiled cooled water and salt)

Why don't you try some polysporin opthalmic onintment or drops. My vet suggested thisis the past when Sadie had a irritated eye.

OMD, how scary for all of you!!!!..I would take Lady Peri in to see the vet tomorrow if the eye doesn't look a whole lot better, I think it is better to be safe then sorry.  It does sound like Pink Eye, but it could be something else.  You will feel better if you know for sure what is going on with the eye...Hugs to all...Cheryl

Hoping Peri is much better tonight. Sorry for the trauma all of you went through!
