I was looking through the archived topics earlier and read that puppies shouldn't walk long distances.  I did not know this.  Lucy is 4 months old and I just assumed she needed a lot of excercise.  On a typical day we play fetch with the ball outside for about 25 minutes total and take 2 -3 walks.  The walks range from 1/4 mile to 1 mile.

I'd be interested in knowing how much excercise other dogs get on an average day.    How much sleep during the day?

Thanks.

I think what you are doing sounds right.  I don't think they want you taking a puppy on a 10km hike and no running or biking when they are that young.  Shorter duration and more often is a good guideline.

I agree. Temperature plays a role, too. They should not be out for any extended length of time in extreme heat or cold.

I agree too!  I think what you're doing is good for a puppy this age.

Our 4 month old pup goes for walks with us in the wooded trails for up to an hour at a time, plus fetching the ball for 15 minutes a stretch a couple times a day. As far as sleeping, Sammy has naps quite a few times a day, I'd say about 3 hours broken up throughout.  He sleeps 9-10 hours at night too. If she is behaving well, you are probably giving her the right amount of exercise.

When Sadie was that age I was walking her a couple times a day for almost a mile each time, plus playing with her in the yard. Anything less than that and I could really see a difference in her behavior--more nipping/biting, etc. It was summer and very hot so we only went early in the morning or late in the day.
